Smoking marijuana makes you lazy, study reveals

Aside the effect of being dazed when one smokes marijuana, a new study reveals it also causes laziness and fatigue. Researchers from the Imperial College London ( the United Kingdom) found out that consistent weed smoking could destroy dopamine (the feel good chemical in the brain).

A new group of researchers led by Mason Silveira from the University of British Columbia, Canada, also  studied the effects of tetrahydrocannabionol – the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

29 rats were used for the research and trained to choose whether they wanted an easy or difficult test to earn sugary treats. Under normal circumstances, most rats chose the harder challenge to earn bigger reward. When the rats were given tetrahydrocannabionol (THC), they chose the easier options, despite earning a smaller reward. The rats under the influence of marijuana became lazy.

According to Silveira’s observation, “What’s interesting, however, is that their ability to do the difficult challenge was unaffected by THC. The rats could still do the task – they just didn’t want to.”

Findings reveal that while people view marijuana as a cure for ailments, more research needs to be done to determine what THC does to the human brain. The result would help researchers block the negative effect of THC. It is also believed that it would allow those who use marijuana for medical purpose to enjoy its benefits with fewer side effects.
