THE third edition of the Lagos Fashion and Design Week (LFDW) kicked off on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, in style.  The show, powered by MTN Nigeria together with GTBank, StyleHouse Files and the British Council, paraded designers, exhibitors and models for the 4-day fashion extravaganza which held at the Oceanview Restaurant of the Eko Hotel & Suites, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Tit bits from the colourful events are presented by ENCOMIUM Weekly…

BUILDING FROM WITHIN – Building from within is the slogan for the theme of this year’s edition.  According to the promoter of the world class show, Omoyemi Akerele of StyleHouse Files, “We want to encourage our own. This is a big business and Nigeria should be the focal point in the fashion world.”

FACES AT THE GRAND OPENING CEREMONY – Fashion forward and trend setters graced the opening day on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at the Oceanview Restaurant.  Globe Motors Director, Nkiru Anumudu, actress Stephanie Okereke-Linus, socialite Eunice Efole, Zapphaire’s Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, Bobby Taylor, Fade Ogunro, were some of the popular faces at the opening ceremony.

BALMORAL SHOWED CLASS – Like a General leading his men to the war front, Ezekiel Adamu, the Balmoral Events henchman rolled up his sleeves to work with his team who recreated a beautiful ambience for the week.  The once flat ground of the Oceanview Restaurant was transformed into a wonderful arena where designers met their clients.  A big marquee was created for the runway and spectator seats.  Another one was for the exhibitors and another was for the lounge where the after party held and at the back space overlooking the Eko Hotel & Suites building.  That was also where the models did their rehearsal.

FABULOUS DESIGNS ON THE GREEN CARPET – Beautiful designs worn by the young and the upwardly mobile graced the green carpet where many photographs were taken before the show proper.  Attendees networked, chatted for hours before the event kicked off.

THE TICKET POINT – The ticket point was on the green carpet.  Ticket sold for N5,000 flat.

VALERIE DAVID’S COLLECTION – Valerie Davids owned by Kehinde Ejiogu stunned everyone with beautiful collections that attracted a loud applause.  Her collections of red carpet attires and evening dresses and some bridals in lace excited many.

HOUSE OF MARIE PIECES – Joan Ibuzo exhibited House of Marie pieces which impressed many.  On the runway were some of her Spring/Summer 2014 Collections.

SUNNY ROSE’S MAGICAL NUMBERS – It will not be wrong to say fashion runs in the family for Maureen Okogwu, boss of Sunny Rose Fashion.  Coming from an aristocratic background and being the niece of former Nigeria’s first lady, late Mrs. Maryam Babangida, the designer didn’t disappoint.  She presented to the audience collections for the powerful female dressers.

NKIRU ANUMUDU CAUSES STIR AT EVENT – Nkiru Anumudu, a director at Globe Motors dictated the pace in the style department.  She is always full of surprises.  Her Ella and Gabby designed outfit and a pineapple hairpiece and purse caused a stir as photographers fell on one another to take her photograph on the green carpet.

WORDS FROM MTN – One of the sponsors of the show was MTN, and its brand logo was everywhere around the venue. This they have done for the past three editions.  According to the brand’s General Manager Consumer Marketing, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Kola Oyeyemi, “We are supporting the fashion show with the intention of growing young designers and entrepreneurs by injecting fresh ideas into the local fashion and style industry.”

WHERE DESIGNERS AND MODELS WERE LODGED – 49 fashion designers participated and about 30 of them were lodged in Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.  So, were the models used on the run-way.  The models were camped a week earlier and they were made to go through rehearsals every day before the show.

DOYIN HAASTRUP STILL IN HER ELEMENT – Super model, Doyin Haastrup-Olatokunbo is still very much in her element as she took to the runway in colourful designs.  After giving birth to two children, the catwalk queen will not be retiring anytime soon.

TAMAR, ISHIOMA, OPEYEMI TOO – Tamar Awobotu, Ishioma Onyebo and Opeyemi Awoyemi were some of the outstanding models used.  Tamar flew in from South Africa to join her colleagues in Lagos for the world class show.

OMOWUNMI AKINNIFESI’S NIGHT OUT- Coming out of her shell, former beauty queen, Omowunmi Akinnifesi was a cynosure at the fashion show.  She attended on Day 2 of the show wearing a lovely knee length gown.

BACK STAGE DRAMA – Many things happened at the back stage where the models were dressed up for their appearance on the runway.  It was a beehive of activities with many running helter-skelter doing this and that to meet up the time schedule for appearance on the runway.

KURAMO BOYS RETURN TO THE STREET – Kuramo boys, who were dislodged at the beach months back returned to the street for the show.  Most of them were spotted, making money from motorists who parked their vehicles by the road side on Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
