South-South: Emotions betrayed as Gov. Akpabio bids farewell to AK diasporans

Two weekends ago, emotions were betrayed and tears flowed freely at the 2014 Town Hall meeting of the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, AKISAN, convention held in Scottdale, Arizona, USA, when Governor Godswill Akpabio, a.k.a. uncommon transformer bid farewell to Akwa Ibom people in the diaspora.
The diasporans were emotionally moved to tears when the governor, while cataloguing the achievements of his administration, mentioned that the occasion marked his final attendance at the annual convention as the chief executive of the oil-rich state.
In enumerating his achievements in the last seven years, the governor noted that aside his uncommon transformation programme, vividly evident in the infra-structural renaissance, rural transformation, human-capital development through the free and compulsory education, free healthcare to pregnant women, children from age zero to six and the elderly in the society and other empowerment policies of his administration, one of his greatest legacies is that he has been able to achieve unity among Akwa Ibom people like never before, thus promoting socio-economic and political advancement for the the Nigerian nation.
The diasporans led by their President, Mr. Emmanuel Isong, the Chairman of AKISAN Board of Trustees, Uwem Equan were all full of praises for the icon of uncommon transformation.

That President Goodluck Jonathan two Thursday back performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a USD1.5 billion petro-chemical plant in the oil-rich Ibeno LGA of Akwa-Ibom State is no longer news.
What is news is that Quantum Petrochemical, a new company founded by Nigeria’s multi-millionaire banker Mr. Jim Ovia, MFR, is the principal actor in the construction of the petro-chemical plant. Sources say the Delta State-born-technocrat cum businessman has equally selected two reputable international firm, IHS and SAIPEM the lead consultant and project developer respectively, to manage the project which upon completion aside creating thousands of new jobs, be the solution to Nigeria’s age-long problem of producing petrochemicals like polyethylene, polypropylene and methanol.
Founder of Zenith Bank, founder cum promoter of Visafone Communications Limited and proprietor of the University of Information and Communication Technology, Agbor, Delta State, the 60-year old multi-millionaire and Godfather of Nigerian banking, according to Forbes Magazine is worth about $900m and is the 19th richest man in Africa.

Several award plaques were carted home by some of the finest artistes in the region. Popular comedians and entertainers, Vitamin C and Kingsley Dan-Patrick were the anchor-men of the event, and they sent the audience rocking to and fro with rib-cracking jokes; with other acts like Ebuka and other young artistes showcasing what will make them masters of the game in the nearest future.
Upcoming Female Artiste 2014 Award was won by Zina Elemele, one of the hottest and upcoming singers set to rule the industry in the nearest future. Zina, who lost her dad about a week to the event showed the stuff she is actually made of when she performed the popular Hausa beat, Gatanan.
According to the organizers of the award, aside having the highest number of votes, Zina also emerged winner of the award because of her charisma and boldness on stage, qualities that gave her an edge over the other nominees in her category.
There were also awardees for Best Reggae Artiste, Best Band of the Year, Best Producer of the Year, Best Worship Leader of the Year, Best Praise Song of the Year, Best Praise Leader of the Year, Best Gospel Rap Artiste of the Year And Best Up-coming Female Artiste of the Year amongst others.
The purpose of the event, according to Swag TV was to encourage and celebrate the up and coming gospel singers/artistes in their quest to get to the top.

Authoritative sources have it that American rap star, Ja Rule, and R&B singer, Ashanti, would be thrilling their Nigerian fans as part of an event to mark this year’s Independence Day celebration.
The show, tagged: Warri Again – The Flagship, is scheduled for October 1 in the oil-rich city of Warri, Delta State. Recall that a duet entitled: Always On Time, by both artistes set the music scene on fire years ago. They may rekindle the energy that song oozed years back.

Member, Akwa Ibom State Council for Arts and Culture and frontline contender for a 2015 seat in the House of Representatives, Christopher Stephens Esin, a.k.a. Mista Xto has added another feather to his cap, the Akwa Ibom Dream Award. The honour was done the Urue Offong/Uruko- born-entertainer cum politician recently in his Uyo office by Mfon Jacott in company of other organizers of the award.
Mista Xto who personifies the true embodiment of the Akwa Ibom music dream was selected for the award due to his immense contributions to the growth of culture and tourism, youth development and nation building.
In a telephone chat, Mista Xto said he dedicated the award to the good people of Oron Federal Constituency as well as other progressives who share in the hope of a greater Nigeria.  It would be recalled that prior to becoming a member of the board, Xto had been PMAN governor, Akwa Ibom State and Chairman, PMAN Governors’ Forum. He also served as Secretary – Special Events Committee during Governor Akpabio’s electioneering campaign.
Now seeking a higher office in the National Assembly, Xto is armed with years of experience in public service, professional distinction, leadership acumen as well as a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies.
