Arise Nigeria, a duly-registered socio-political organization with the mandate of supporting good governance, ensuring credible elections, due process as well as protecting good democratic values in the country, has made serious in-roads into every nook and cranny of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom State.
In a release signed by Mr. Patrick Okon, the Director of Media and Publicity, Hon. Patty Etete-Ineme, a former member of the House of Representatives has been appointed the State Co-ordinator; Obong Otong Akpabio, the State Secretary and Barr. David Udoh, Legal Adviser, amongst others that constitute the State Exco.
However, in a message of solidarity from the national secretariat of Arise Nigeria, Chief Jasper Johnson, the National Co-ordinator said the Hon. Etete-Ineme-led-exco has been mandated not only to recruit members across the nooks and cranny of Akwa Ibom State, but to spread the message of change for the new Nigeria with a view to sensitizing the people to support democracy, rule of law and ensuring credible candidature during elections.
In a related development, the Hon. Etete-Ineme-led-exco while inaugurating the 31 Local Government Chapters last week stated that the organization is not only committed to promoting good governance, credible elections, due process and rule of law, but is also positioned as watch dogs to monitor government’s operation to the benefit of the common man.
Etete called on all Akwa Ibomites and Nigerians to arise and join hands with a clear resolution to change attitudes to make the country a better place, stressing that with the support of all Nigerians, the president will succeed and even surpass his predecessors in terms of achievements; while maintaining that is the more reason all Nigerians must arise, and work in support of Mr. President’s second term bid come 2015.
Initiated in 2006, the organization whose motto is ‘Get Involved and Stop Complaining’ has grown to identify with the positive strides of President Goodluck Jonathan as demonstrated in his administration.
MORE RECORDS TO BE BROKEN AT OBUDU INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN RACE
The Obudu International Mountain Race is here again, and in the build up to the kick-off, two former champions will be seeking to make history. They are the Ethiopian duo of Rehima Kedir and Yalew Genet. They have set their sights on becoming the first women to win the race title twice after confirming their participation for the 9th edition of the race which holds next month at the Obudu Ranch Resort in Obudu, Cross River State.
Kedir was the first African woman to win the women’s title in 2006 after supplanting inaugural winner, Anna Pichrtová of the Czech Republic as champions, while Genet became the fourth Ethiopian winner of the title five years later.
Eight different winners have won the last eight editions with the Ethiopians winning a record five times but unlike the men who have had two athletes (both Ethiopians) repeating as winners, no woman has repeated as winner, and this trend the duo of Kedir and Genet hope to change come November 23, 2013 in Obudu. Genet was unsuccessful last year in her bid and will be hoping she would be second time lucky this time around.
The Obudu race is organized by the Cross River State Government in conjunction with the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN). The race is supported by the African Athletics Confederation (CAA), the World Mountain Running Association, (WMRA) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The total prize money for the race is over $275,000 with the winners in each gender category going home with $50,000, while $20,000 and $9,000 will go to the second and third placed finishers. The prizes for 4th -10th placed finishers in each category are $4,500, $4,000, $3,000, $2,500, $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000.
DELTA ASSEMBLY SPEAKER, VICTOR OCHEI’S PASSION FOR CHARITY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE
Having a great idea and assembling a team to bring that concept to life is one of the steps to successful leadership. This is one of the qualities of Rt. Hon (Engr.) Victor Onyekachi Ochei, the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly.Prior to his elevation to speakership, the bubbly lawmaker had represented Aniocha North State Constituency since 2003. He was the deputy minority leader of the Third Assembly and also served as the Chairman, House Committee on Education of the penultimate Assembly.
His dynamic leadership has aided the House to function optimally, and in synergy with the Executive in giving hope to the masses, who look up to government for succour. His avowed commitment is geared towards ensuring that the legislature continues on its part of robust, painstaking and detailed legislation so that the people can continue to derive the benefit of good governance.
For one thing, Hon. Ochei believes most fervently that when life is made politically secure for majority of the citizens, the best state exists. The Victor Ochei Foundation which he founded in 2001 has provided brand-new buses to all secondary schools in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Ochei is one of the lawmakers who will go down in history as touching the most lives in the country. This is because the University of Benin Chemical Engineering graduate has continually been affecting the lives of people, especially his people of Delta State positively. The speaker who strongly believes in the saying that: “Whatever we do for ourselves alone dies with us; and that whatever we do for others and the world remains and is immortal”, has ensured that his positive imprint is planted in the hearts of many who have come his way.
To Ochei, The Victor Ochei Foundation which he founded in 2001 has been very active in the areas of poverty alleviation. This outfit, among other philanthropic gestures, has provided succour to less privileged students who crave formal education. His contributions in the education sector are immense too. His Foundation has acquired buses to convey students to and from schools in Aniocha North Local Government Area where he is representing.
A phenomenal philanthropist, Rt. Hon. Ochei has attracted monumental development to his people through project execution, scholarship schemes and many empowerment programmes that have transformed the lives of the people of his Constituency.
Meanwhile, the articulate leader has promised to reward good journalism in the country. This laudable scheme, he has started by doling out one million naira each to journalists annually, while he has promised to extend the gesture to other parts of the country, especially the Southwest.
Apparently aware of the benefits of good education, Hon. Ochei, in 1996, returned to the University of Benin where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He also holds Certificate in Good Governance from Oxford University, England.

HARRYSONG IN TROUBLE FOR DOUBLE-DEALING
Unless certain frayed nerves are calmed in the next few days, Delta-State born R&B artist, Harrysong will be swimming in an ocean of trouble with his record label, Question Mark, over what the management of the company describes as breach of contract.
The label, Question Mark Records, has vowed to use all lawful means at its disposal to seek redress, following a deal he reportedly signed with another record label, Five Star Music.
The label, is claiming that Harrysong is still in contract with them, thus any deal signed by him with another label tantamount to double-dealing, and hence remains invalid. Findings have it that recently Harrysong actually signed a deal with the new label, Five Star Music having been warned by Question Mark label of the existence of a contract between it and the artist.
Meanwhile, the source continued that Harrysong has gone into hiding, switching off his phones, feigning being abroad for one or two engagements, whereas, he was spotted in Asaba (Delta) a week or two ago at a social function.
