FEMI KUTI – CITATION

Today, we are serenading an illustrious African, a great man with enviable pedigree that runs through generations.  We are celebrating the 4th Grammy nomination of Nigeria’s son and pride, in the World Music category with the brilliant album, No Place for my Dream.

We are lining behind Femi Kuti on this glorious feat which means a lot to good people who understand what it takes to be selected among the greatest musicians on planet earth.

On Sunday, January 26, 2014, in Los Angeles, California, the United States of America, at the Staples Centre, our own Femi Kuti will stand shoulder above some of the world’s most creative minds as far as music go.

And we pray that this time he brings home the Grammy.

This 4th nomination at the 56th Grammy Awards will be his turning point – and he will transform from a nominee to winner.

Ladies and gentlemen, compatriots and kinsmen, the good people of Nigeria, let us welcome an icon and conscience of the nation, activist and gifted musician, OLUFELA OLUFEMI ANIKULAPO-KUTI.

Born on June 16, 1962, in London (the United Kingdom) to Fela and Remi Ransome-Kuti, he came to the world with a lineage we adulate.  His great grandfather (Rev. Canon J. J. Ransome-Kuti) was a famous pioneer in the local production of Christian music in Nigeria; and his grandfather (Rev. Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti) was a music teacher and song composer whose famous Egba anthem, begins with the sonorous line, L’ori oke ati petele….

Femi’s grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (later Anikulapo-Kuti) was a teacher, activist and leader, and widely known as ‘The Mother of Africa’ and ‘The Lioness of Lisabi.’

Femi’s father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was the distinguished iconoclast and lionized revolutionary musician who created a sound distinctly recognizable on planet earth – Afro-beat!

Femi Kuti stands on the shoulders of these giants and more – and he has carved a path we are proud to light.

In 1977, he moved in with his father (Fela Anikulapo-Kuti) and learnt the rudiments and esoteric language of music.  By the late 80s, he already had his own band, The Positive Force.  And by 1988, he tasted international acclaim when he performed in France and Germany.

Over the years, Femi Kuti, with beautiful albums to his name, has done us proud.

With his first album, No Cause for Alarm in 1989, his discography includes Mind Your Own Business (1991), Femi Kuti (1995), Shoki Shoki (1998), Fight to Win (2001), and the recent No Place for My Dream (2013). He has matured well and grown to be a maestro and a powerful voice for all who seek justice and a better life.

With instant recognition in his own right, in spite of having a very great father and lineage, he is a man we applaud and cheer.

A noble son of Africa, abundantly gifted musician, band leader, the king of Afro-beat, hard working, extremely intelligent and immensely creative international super star.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let us rise and give a standing ovation for the titan of music, eminent and engaging  entertainer, OLUFELA OLUFEMI ANIKULAPO-KUTI.
