Star crooner, Timaya responds to rape allegation ’Yes we had sex, but it was consensual’

+ ‘IT’S A WELL CALCULATED ATTEMPT AT EXTORTION AND BLACKMAIL’

These are certainly not the best of times for the career of Inetimi Alfred Odom, known in the music circle as Timaya.

The Ukwu crooner and self-styled Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa fresh from welcoming the arrival of his baby number two birthed to him by his girlfriend and baby mama, Barbara has had to weather a tough storm in recent weeks as he has been accused of sexually assaulting a US-based Nigerian, Sheila B by the victim herself.

The young, light-skinned woman took to online social platform, Instagram on Thursday, July 23, 2015, using a designated account ‘exposingtherealTimaya’ to make the accusations against the star singer, which also includes screenshots and audio recordings from previous conversations between the duo.

In her maiden post directed at Timaya, she wrote: “You are a rapist. I will make sure the world knows it. You might want to cancel your show and get out of Atlanta because I am going to the police.”

She followed this up with a reply from Timaya when she wrote: “I don’t hurt people, but if you want me dead, then it is fine. I leave you to God. No problem, I will leave the town as you advised; I am taking myself off the show.”

Apparently angered that the father-of-two children went ahead with the show as planned and contrary to his reply that he would take himself off the show, she said: “Timaya, what you did was wrong, and you know it. Just because you are a star does not give you the right. Yet you still went ahead and did your show while I was hurting.”

In an apparent reaction to musings in some quarters, she further claimed it was not her intention to expose the star but that she was forced to do so after he threatened her life.

He has now officially responded to the allegations which have been making the rounds in the web space in the past two weeks.

In his reaction, the singer (who is still in the United States of America, the country where the incident was alleged to have taken place) in an email statement sent to ENCOMIUM Weekly through his media representative, did not deny knowing the lady in question, but reiterated that they had consensual sex, not rape.

In his words, “Timaya did have consensual sex with Sheila who had been a friend on Instagram for some months.”

Continuing, he said, “He never denied this even in the recordings she released. There was no rape or forceful sex in any form.”

Further strengthening his stance in the matter, he declared: “Timaya dares her to provide any evidence of either of this. It was Timaya that reported to the hotel security, not the other way round. It is important to note that Timaya is a God-fearing man who has two beautiful daughters that he dotes on unreservedly and loves unabashedly. He is also known to support the causes of Niger Delta women without making a song and a dance of it.

‘With his fame and fortune, sound health and profound understanding of the American judicial system, Timaya could never have been found in the scenario mischievously fabricated by Ms. Sheila.”

He, however, admitted that the star indeed begged her, but not over what she claimed. “The only time Timaya could be heard begging was when she started talking about his career, which he jealously and fiercely guards.”

The multi award winning crooner further accused Ms Sheila of ”cheap” blackmail, that she is merely seeking publicity: “It is surprisingly timely that Ms Sheila released a record single just a day ago in the midst of all these.

“This is a clear pointer to her well-orchestrated intentions and cheap blackmail. The whole issue is just a premeditated attempt at extortion and smearing a global brand name consecrated on sheer creativity, relentless enterprise and continual evolution and steadfastness.”

The end doesn’t seem to be in sight in this matter as Timaya’s legal representatives have been brought in to clear his name. “And his legal team has swung into action with a view to clearing his name,” the statement concluded.
