States Disagree On School Resumption Date

There is disagreement among states of the federation on the resumption date for schools, despite the order by the federal government that all schools should reopen on Monday, September 22, 2014.

Lagos and Ondo states have complied with the directive of September 22, 2014. Schools in these two states have reopened. The two states said they are ready to allow the children back in school. Lagos State Government said the last suspected case of the Ebola Virus Disease has been cleared, having tested negative after days of surveillance.

This is even as the governor said the development meant that the state was now Ebola free and that it was safe enough for schools to resume on September 22, 2014. The Kano State government has also directed schools should reopen in the state on September 22, 2014.

This, however, is not the case with Ogun State where the date of school resumption has been shifted to October 8, 2014. Ogun State government, through the Secretary to the Government, Mr. Adeoluwa, said it was compelled to shift the resumption date in the interest of pupils, teachers, parents and other stakeholders. Adding that a number of gadgets like infrared thermometre, hand gloves, sanitizers, water, among others, have been procured for use at schools in the state.

Rivers and Oyo states pegged their schools resumption date for October 6, 2014.

According to a statement issued by the office of the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli, the resumption date affects all public and private schools in the state. According to him, government had made adequate preparations for the resumption of schools.
