Steps to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

New medical rules reveal babies should sleep at least for six months in the same bedroom with their parents. This is to help reduce danger of sleep-related deaths.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), argued that babies should sleep in their parent’s room for a whole year, but that they shouldn’t share beds with their parents. Babies are meant to sleep on firm surface such as a crib without any pillows.

Co-author of the APP guidelines, Dr. Lori Feldman-Winter said,  “Bed-sharing is potentially hazardous for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and this is most important for infants under four months of age and those who were premature or low birth weight.” It’s also noted in the guidelines that breastfeeding can also prevent  sudden infant death syndrome.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has reduced a little because doctors have been asked to advise parents to put their babies to sleep on their backs without pillows to avoid suffocation.

Researcher at the University of Virginia in Cahrlottesville, USA, Dr. Fern Hauck said, “The majority of sleep-related infant deaths occur when babies are sleeping on their stomach, or with soft bedding nearby, or when bed-sharing with their mother, other caregiver or other family members.

According to researchers, about 12,000 babies died from sleep related-related tragedies from 2004 to 2014. Parents need to be vigilant and make sure everyone taking care of their baby follow A-B-C of safe sleeping. Where A, means the baby should always be placed to sleep ALONE, and should sleep on his/her BACK. The baby should also be put in a CRIB only.
