Student Union Government demands justice- Writes Speaker of Ogun Assembly

FOR OUR STUDENTS NOT TO DIE FOR NOTHING; THE NEED TO BRING SANITY BACK TO OUR HIGHWAYS, BEING A JOINT PRESS TEXT PRESENTED BY THE STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT OF OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY WITH LEADERSHIP OF NANS ZONE-D, NANS JCC OGUN STATE

You would recall at about 12noon on June 26, 2015, our students numbering up to twelve (12) were massacred in a ghastly motor accident on their way to Sango after finishing their examination. Most painful a student who has graduated about three years ago but having one problem or the other who was finally cleared that very day was also killed in that accident while some were just finishing post UTME.  You would also recall that the accident was caused as a result of reckless driving by a trailer carrying container with yet to be known content stone throw to SELPLASE LTD on Sagamu/Benin Express Road. It is also pathetic to inform you that the deadly driver is still at large despite all the security apparatus in the state and in the country. As we speak, nobody has been arrested in relation to what we consider as possible case of genocide, neither the company nor the truck owner has been brought to book. The decision of  various government agencies (Federal Road Safety Corps, Police and TRACE) to take the victims to a private hospital where they can’t get immediate standard medical attention at a time when they should have been taken to OSUTH, this calls for serious investigation. Our lives begin to end when we continue to be silent on things that matter. We have discovered that silence is no more golden, less the continuous mass execution of our students and comrades will continue on the highway. We therefore demand without any hesitation the following:

1. That the security agencies provide the driver of the truck without any further delay.

2. That SELPLASE LTD should be thoroughly investigated for genocide as the company remains the only reasonable destination of the deadly truck.

3. That State and Federal Law prohibiting articulated vehicles from plying the highways in the day time be enacted and rigorously supervised to ensure compliance where such law already exist.

4. That necessary security agencies should be at alert to their duties and always be on duty to monitor movement on the highway.

5. That the families of the deceased be well compensated for their loss by both the company and government.

6. That on no account must security agencies especially the Road Safety and the Police take road accident victims to private facilities where they can be better taken to government hospitals with better equipment and personnel. We see the development as inhuman alliance by the private hospitals and security agencies to take advantage of the victim to further enrich their pockets.

These and more we are ready to pursue with vigour and determination of soul until justice is served. We shall occupy until government and security agencies arrest and prosecute both the driver and the company. Until then, we shall from time to time take to the road to ensure justice is served.
