Subscribers force DSTV to abandon transgender TV Series, ‘I am Jazz’

A couple of days back, the social media was agog over the decision by giant cable pay television provider, DSTV to air the story of a transgender child tagged, I am Jazz scheduled to show on TLC, Channel 172 on Tuesday, October 27,2015. Uproar and discontent greeted the mini-series.

Subscribers took to the social media to express their displeasure through a broadcast about DSTV’s decision.

“I join Nigerian parents to protest as DSTV Nigeria plans to air transgender theme soap opera for children starting from Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

“DSTV has been airing an advert for I am Jazz on their TLC Channel 172, which was set to start showing on DSTV in Nigeria on October 27, 2015.

“The problem is that, it is a reality TV series about Jazz, a transgender kid, an 11 year boy who has transitioned into a girl.

“You will agree with me that this programme is not appropriate for any youth in Nigeria, talk less of our young children. Please, let’s stand up to protect our children and moral fibre of the country.”

Thousands of social media users kept broadcasting the protest messages until it got the attention of DSTV.

However, DSTV had risen to the occasion. Timothy Okwu, DSTV spokesperson said, I am Jazz has been pulled off DSTV schedule.

“Multichoice Nigeria is aware of the concerns raised by our viewers across various platforms, about the airing of “I am Jazz”, the story of a transgender child scheduled to show on TLC, channel 172 on 27 October 2015.

“After careful consideration and wide consultation from various stakeholders, Multichoice informs its esteemed subscribers that the mini-series, I am Jazz has been pulled off the schedule.

“We regularly assess the impact our content have on our customers and we reassure them that their interests are always considered.

“However, we take comfort in knowing that our decoders are encrypted with the parental control feature that empowers parents with ultimate control over what their children view. “We also encourage parents to make use of this feature as much as possible to ensure that their children only watch what their parents deem appropriate.”

MRS. STELLA EYINOCHA

Have you heard about I am Jazz?

It is a necessary evil. Homosexual extremism has come to live with us. The Western world is trying to force these seeming evil down our throats, and it should be resisted.

DSTV tried it with Big Brother Africa. Nigerians revolted and it was yanked off air. Only Interested viewer subscribed. TV programme with controversies are not supposed to be on air just like. It should be available on request.

These days, every room has TV set and parents must, as a matter of fact, block all channels, except the acceptable ones that are meant for kids, putting into consideration their various ages. I am aware of parental guidance pin and all. However, I was to believe that parents should be proactive on issues pertaining to their kids, most importantly what they watch!

TUNDE OKUNOLA

Personally, I control what my child watches.  I am 100 percent against the airing of the programme. It is another way to corrupt our children (our future). I personally even control what my child watches.

DIPO OLADAPO

I have heard about the transgender show. I have even watched some shows, where they featured some transgender on DSTV. I think it is morally wrong. It is not good for our society, we should all condemn it. I am not really aware of the guidance, but I think it is necessary.

BIODUN AHMED

It is not only I am Jazz that is a transgender show, I know another one which has already started airing.

I am appalled by it. It shows that the TV medium has become a source of dragging the moral makeup of the world into the mud.

I am aware. It’s been advertised on the medium regularly even at that, it is really irritating to a large extent.

MRS. ADEFEMI

I am aware of the programme. I don’t expect such medium to air that type of programme. It doesn’t have any moral value for our kind of society. Even with parental guidance, some children are extra smart. They will still find their way around it. Such should not be aired in Nigeria. It might be acceptable in the Western world but not in Nigeria.

MRS. SHOBIYE

Yes, I have. I think it is absurd. It should not be aired. Though we are in the end time. Oh I am very much aware of the PG thing but do you know most children can get the code easily?

Whether PG or not, it depends on how we parents bring up our children. For instance, my children know what to watch when I’m not there because, I have given them lectures on these things.
