Synagogue building collapse: Death toll now stand at 70 – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said today (September 17) that a total of 70 bodies have been pulled from the rubble of a Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) building that collapsed in Lagos last week.

NEMA spokesman for southwest Nigeria, Ibrahim Farinloye, revealed this while adding that 131 survivors had been found. He was speaking as construction vehicles shifted concrete and steel debris from the site; he, however, said that the nationalities of the victims were yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, South African President – Jacob Zuma – had on Tuesday (September 16) said at least 67 South Africans were killed when the building collapsed, saying “not in the recent history of our country have we had this large number of our people die in one incident outside the country”.
