A food supplement derived from fish oil, Omega-3, may help smokers quit the habit, a researcher has claimed.
A daily capsule of the fatty acid helped nicotine addicts reduce consumption by 11 percent after a month. A deficiency in the supplement damages the structure of nerve cells and interrupts communication between nerves in areas of the brain involved with feeling pleasure and satisfaction.
Israeli addiction specialist Dr Sharon Shenkar said: “The substances and medications used currently to help people reduce and quit smoking are not very effective and cause adverse effects that are not easy to cope with. Omega-3 – an inexpensive and easily available dietary supplement with almost no side effects – reduces smoking significantly”.
