Encomium
Yakubu Jubril, known as YQ, hails from Kogi state. The talented singer recently signed a multi-million naira record deal with one of the fast growing record labels, Cadilly Entertainment with Tear Rubber (Eru Ni)’ being his first effort under the label. His follow up single, Nawo Nawo is a collaboration with Olamide. The video was released on March 2, 2015.
In an interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly, the singer shared his reason for taking a break from doing music.
How did music start for you?
Music started for me while in secondary school. I used to mime songs during the school’s literary and debating society days and at press club events.
How did you get the stage name YQ?
The name means Why Queue. I got it during my growing years at Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos. I formed the group called Q-Krest and we did mainly accapella.
We have not heard your music in the last few years, what happened to YQ?
I decided to take a break and was out of the country for a while.
What inspired your new single, Nawo Nawo?
Nawo Nawo which is a prayer song was inspired by my desire to reach out to everyone that works hard to make money to take care of his bills, family and investments while enjoying the fun side of life.
Why did you choose to feature Olamide?
My management, the producer. Laylow and I, after several discussions concluded that Olamide was the perfect person for the song which he proved.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself accomplishing great feats including worldwide acceptance of my music which will ultimately translate to me headlining great concerts around the world and recording platinum record sales.
