Telco services survey adjudges Glo best 4G LTE network in Lagos

The National Independent Wireless Broadband Quality Report (NIWBQR) has revealed the outcome of its recent survey in which Globacom was the best 4G LTE services provider in Lagos city and environs.

The network engineering services company, an arm of Enextgen Wireless Ltd, specialises in generating national broadband quality of experience report on mobile wireless communication concerns in Nigeria.

According to NIWBQR, the research assessed  the quality of user experience and the technical quality of the 4G LTE network in Lagos adding that it purchased SIMs with unlimited data and unlimited throughput from the five service providers considered in the report so as to execute simultaneous FTP data transfers and Pings on all the networks. “The other service providers studied were MTN, Smile, and Estream”, the company explained.

After the test, NIWBQR disclosed that Globacom’s 4G LTE services came tops owing to its services which stood out in uplink and downlink application layer throughput.  Smile and came on its heels. Throughput refers to the amount of data moved successfully from one place to another in a given time period. It is measured in bits per second (bps), megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps), the report said.

Globacom, said NIWBQR has an outstanding RF coverage and quality, without any common Radio Frequency (RF) performance challenges like RRC Call Drops, RRC Connection Failures, Handoff failures, excessive call setup delays, amongst other service  indicators.

Smile came second in the report, even though it had lower uplink and downlink application layer throughput than most due to an undeclared throughput and was ranked higher than MTN and as a result of its  higher service accessibility which is greater than that of  MTN and better coverage than.

On the part of  MTN, the research firm noted that its shortcoming was that the network  “lacked contiguous LTE service along the driven route”. As such, some of the application layer throughput recorded for MTN was in 3G”, NIWBQR concluded.

Said NIWBQR, “The throughputs and other performance measurement indicators recorded are therefore those that any customers with similar subscriptions are likely to experience”, adding further that “wide-ranging driving test was done around Victoria Island using various tools including mobile phones, scanner, GPS Receiver and logging tool. Types of data collected included latency (packet delay), continuous uplink file transfer and continuous downlink file transfer, among others”.
