The case against the Canadians, Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo

 

The cyber bullying, blackmail and extortion case against Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo stipulates stiff penalties of 10 years imprisonment and N25 million fine, if convicted.

Arraigned at the Yaba Magistrate court on December 23, 2016, for onward transfer to a Federal High Court, they were charged under sections 24 and 27, of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2015.

In the four count charge, No. A/203/2016, between the Commissioner of Police Vs Babatunde Oyebade, Kiranjot Matharoo and Tara Matharoo, they were accused of committing the offences in July 2016.

The prosecutors in the matter are Barrister Goddy Osuyi and William Ologun, with Inspector Felix Nwachukwu as I.P.O.

Listed as witnesses were Omoregie Ige, Dipo Balogun and Femi Otedola.

The Canadians were alleged to have threatened Ige with kidnap and told to pay N3.5 million. Damaging details were published about her in naijagistlive.

For Balogun, he was threatened with death, kidnap and harm unless he paid for the disparaging story on him on naijagistlive.

Otedola was threatened with death, kidnap, harm and defamation unless he paid for the information about him and his family on naijagistlive.

The case before Mr. A.O. Ojo of Yaba Magistrate court (Lagos) was adjourned to January 25, 2017, before a Federal High Court judge in Ikoyi (Lagos).

But ever since, following the elopement of the sisters, nothing has happened except further adjournments and issuance of bench warrants…
