‘The thought of romance in the industry has never crossed my mind, but I could consider it’’ – Emmanuel Ikubese, Mr. Nigeria

He’s an actor, TV host, model and a ladies’ man; not only that, he competed at Mr. World 2014 and emerged first runner-up.

After bagging a degree in International Relations from the United States International University, Kenya, he has since starred in the MTV-produced award-winning ‘Shuga’, a series about HIV.

His passion to care for children and inspire the youth led him start up ‘The Emmanuel Ikubese Foundation’ and his current project ‘Respect A Woman’, lends credence to this.

In this chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly, he talks about his reign as Mr Nigeria 2014, his favourite things, current project and romance…

What’s the latest with you?

I’m currently working on a couple of new movie projects and also the launch of my pet project, Project RAW. It’s a campaign on domestic violence against women. RAW stands for Respect A Woman.

What has your reign been like?

It’s been amazing so far. I got to set up my own foundation, I got the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the world Stage, making history as the first African to get to first runner up at the Mr World and becoming Mr. World Africa. I have also visited lots of secondary schools and universities, speaking and motivating young people.

What has been the highlight for you?

The highlight for me was representing my country well at the world stage. This has always been a childhood dream for me.

What has fame done for you?

It has opened a whole lot more opportunities for me.

What has being Mr. Nigeria denied you of?

Nothing really I am still the same Emmanuel and I do the same things Emmanuel would do (laughs).

How do you combine acting and modelling?

By God’s grace am able to combine them.

Which brings in more money? Modelling or acting?

Both actually, they both bring good money.

Would you consider music?

I once had a music career when I was living in Kenya. My stage name was 9con. But I’m enjoying what I’m doing now.

How do you maintain your good look?

I try to eat healthy and I keep fit by working out. I love eating my local Delta food – starch and banga. So maybe that’s helps too.

You always look good on the red carpet, what informs how you dress?

Thanks to my team, and also my stylist, they always make sure I look good every time I get out.

How do you shop for your outfit?

I love to patronize our Nigerian designers, both the upcoming and established designers like Bosi and Charles, Mai Atafo, Yomi Casual, Mudi, etc. Sometimes, when I travel I get to buy other designer stuff.

Is Mr. Nigeria taken?

Hmmm! (coughs).

Would you consider dating in the industry?

I have never really thought about it. But now that you’ve asked, maybe

What motivates you as a person?

I believe nothing is impossible to accomplished as long as you remain focused and set you mind to it. I also believe that you put God first in everything you.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hollywood baby! (smiles).
