‘There too many public holidays’ – Nigerians tell Buhari

Work free days are days set aside by federal government on which normal activities, especially business or work, are suspended or reduced. Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate, commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance. It can be designated by government or religious institutions.

While some welcome public holidays, others see them as a waste of productive time.

Meanwhile, encomium.ng sought few Nigerians’ opinion to know if there are too many public holidays observed in recent times, and here are their responses…

Uket Eno

There are too many public holidays observed in Nigeria. They should minimize it because it’s eating up productive time that should be used to do other things.

Ekundayo Deborah

It’s not too much. The holiday doesn’t follow consistently. It is the time I have to spend with my family. I think they are not too many.

Christopher Ani

I think there are not too many public holidays, they are time for people to rest and relax. It’s ok the way it is. How can someone be working for a whole 365 days without a break? Even students need it to at least relieve their brains.

Jayeola Dasola

The holiday is too much, it has been making some people very lazy. It is even affecting some organizations. It should be cut down to some extent, especially those that fall under the weekend, it shouldn’t be extended.

Emeka Frank

They are no too many public holidays because public holidays are set aside to honour a particular event or somebody. So I believe it is not too much. It should just be respected.

Martins Julius

There are not too many public holidays. Someone will not die because you are trying to please the government or your employer. We are not workaholic, some days are supposed to be set off for people to have the time with their family members.

Oriyomi Wasiu

All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. I believe there are no too many public holidays in Nigeria as far as I am concerned. These are the days most people try to relax with their family members, other days like the weekends are always busy for most people as they tend to reach out to one need or the other.

David Blessing

There are too many public holidays in Nigeria. I believe it should be reduced, at least they have their weekends to spend time with family members. I see public holidays as a waste of time because most times if a memorable day is on Saturday or Sunday, they will still extend the holiday period to the following Monday, it has no meaning.

Ajibola Moses

I believe the holidays are not too many but the way it is been prolonged is becoming something else. For example, if October 1, is Sunday, I don’t see any need of extending the break to Monday, Sunday alone is enough to mark Independence Day.

Francis Faith

No, they are not too many public holidays because they are not an everyday thing. They are set aside at least once in a month or none at all. Though there are still weekends, there are also days one really need to respect but most times people are seeing it as their leisure days but its not a bad thing.
