The race for who would succeed David Cameron as British Prime Minister was narrowed to two names (Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom) on Thursday, July 7.
However, events took a dramatic turn on Monday,July 11, when Andrea Leadsom announced his decision to stepdown leaving only Theresa May.
Mrs Andrea Leadsom in her statement said “strong leadership is needed urgently to begin the work of withdrawing from the European Union. A nine-week leadership campaign at such a critical moment is highly undesirable.”
She added that Mrs May, who had the support of more than 60% of Conservative MPs and was “ideally placed to implement Brexit on the best possible terms for the British people and she has promised she will do so”.
According to reports British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would officially resign by Wednesday as Home Secretary Theresa May appeared set to take over the reins.
Cameron had announced his resignation after failing in his bid for Britain to vote “remain” in the June 23 referendum that asked voters whether the U.K. should stay in the European Union.
The final vote for the new Prime Minister was scheduled for September 9. But with May as the only candidate left in the race to replace him, Cameron has said he would officially step down by Wednesday.
According to a CNN report, Britain’s parliamentary system allows the leader of the ruling party to be automatically made prime minister.
The report went further to state that May has not been officially confirmed as prime minister, but it looks likely she will be, and that even the wider party will be left out, having no say in it at all. She could be in office as early as this week.
According to the BBC, The 1922 committee is holding discussions with the Conservative Party board to discuss confirming Mrs May as the winner.
David Cameron says he will do Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday and then head to Buckingham Palace and officially tender his resignation to the Queen and recommend she sends for Theresa May as his replacement.
Mrs May will then go to Buckingham Palace to see the Queen and receive her invitation to form a government.
Theresa May should then be in place as UK prime minister by Wednesday evening.
The Mrs May’s first task will be to form a cabinet, after which she can begin the Brexit negotiations.
