ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke with him on Friday, February 28, 2014, in a phone interview on his new deal, career, relationship and plans for 2014.
It has been great. Things are getting better by the day.
How did your journey into the music industry start?
It started from singing other people’s songs like King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. These two musicians really motivated me to go into music fully.
When you decided you were going into music, what was your parents’ reaction?
Mom never supported. She wanted me to be an accountant. I tried to be but after my ND in Bida Polytechnic, Niger State, I couldn’t continue because I was already in love with music. She is supportive now because of the song, This Tear. She loves it and encouraged me to do more of that kind of music.
Are you working on any album or singles presently?
Yes, I am working on my album. Four singles are out already which are Catch me if you can ft. Ice Prince and Phenom; This Year, God sent ft. Tiwa Savage and Madantin.
On and off stage, who is Jaywon?
Just like every other young man on the street working to save his future and easy going.
Nothing really. I just can’t go out like I used to.
Due to our inquisitiveness, we know you just signed a deal with PZ Cool World. Tell us about it.
Yes, you will get to know when work starts fully.
How were you contacted for this deal?
They contacted me after Odun yi won the award for Recording of the Year at the last Headies awards and the song is number two on MTN Most Downloaded Song.
How much is the deal?
You will hear and see soon.
Is this your first endorsement?
Yes, first major one.
What do you enjoy most about being a musician?
Doing what I love doing and actually getting paid for it.
What are your plans for 2014?
To release many evergreen songs like This year.
We heard Kennis was about dropping you last year, but your hit song, Odun yi, saved you. Is this true?
Your fans nicknamed you Oba Onitinko, how do you think they came about this nickname?
My fans gave me the name after I released the song, Tinko Angel.
There was a time you said your mom was an hustler, so are you. Please, what prompted this saying?
My mom was a very hard working woman, was all I meant. So, I must also be hard working.
Yes, I am.
Tell us about her.
She is my dream girl. I love her so much and she is in school for now.
Controversies have it that you mentioned her name in one of your music, Kikelomo temi, Kikelomo temi, olomi. Is that her name?
No, that’s not her.
When are you planning to get married?
Very soon, you will know when it finally happens.
How do you spend your leisure?
I am always at home, watching movies.
What lessons have you learnt about success so far?
I have learnt to always stay humble and fight for the future before it comes.
