Tinubu, Melaye finally see reason, stop nonsensical spat

The ongoing rift between Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of All Progressives Congress (APC) National leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, representing Lagos Central, and Senator Dino Malaye, who is representing Kogi west may finally be laid to rest as both parties have decided to tow the path of peace and lay aside their grievances which has constituted major headlines in the past one week.

The development might be attributed to Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki’s intervention, after having separate meetings with both Senators on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, spending about 2 hours with each. Saraki was reported to have appealed to both senators who are members of the APC to embrace peace, for the good of the party and for the interest of Nigeria.

It was reported that Tinubu and Melaye have agreed to end their dispute which started on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, during a Senate closed door session where Senators deliberated on how to bring an end to the ongoing trial of Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu by the Federal Government over allegations of forging Senate standing rules.

Meanwhile, Senator Remi Tinubu, who accused Senator Dino Melaye of gender discrimination, attempted assault and endangering her life, has said she has forgiven him.

She made the statement on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, while receiving a delegation of the Lagos State House of Assembly, members from Lagos-Central and members of the All Progressives Congress caucus in the Senate as well as some party leaders who paid her a solidarity visit at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

According to a Punch report, she was quoted as saying : “When the Senate President invited me yesterday (Tuesday) and I gave my word. You can see the channel I have taken in the aftermath of the event. I reported to the IGP; I wrote to him also, after I waited for one week. When it happened, it was him I went to. I waited for one week and nothing was done. I also wrote to the party (the APC) chairman.

“I met with the Senate leadership yesterday (Tuesday) after one week; I met with him (Senate President Bukola Saraki) yesterday. And as a Christian, I said I had already forgiven him (Melaye) for the way I was treated. But the point is that what people don’t realise is that I am a very reserved person.

“After I gave my word to him (Saraki) yesterday, I told myself that at 55 I am not a wimp of anybody.

“I witnessed the Sani Abacha regime and I know what I saw and why I am committed to this cause. But now, my hands are tied to say I forgive people. I am a Christian; when I give my word, I must abide by it. But I am not scared to follow this through…

“I want to use this opportunity to thank all Nigerian women who rose up; the women rights groups who are calling, conducting press conferences and doing a lot of things.”

Senator Remi Tinubu  also debunked allegations of sponsoring protest against her Kogi counterpart, claiming she could not even afford it.

She said, “I didn’t give anybody anything; I don’t even have N80m in my personal salary account in the Senate. And I don’t think if I have any other savings I want to use it to mobilise women to protest. What about the investments we have put into politics? How much has that done for this country?”

Meanwhile, the wave of protest continued yesterday, as four members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, which include the Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Sanni and popular actor Desmond Eliot, Stormed the National secretariat of the APC in protest against Senator Dino Malaye, calling for immediate sanction of the Kogi senator.

While the Speaker the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa led a contingent to the National Assembly  to express their grievances against the Kogi Senator.

Another women group wearing brand shirts  with inscription – “No to impunity for gender based violence” also added their voice to those calling for the head of Senator Dino Melaye.

It was also reported that the National Union of Lagos Students NULSS have given Senator Dino till August 1, 2016 to apologize  to Mrs. Tinubu or be declared “persona non grata in Lagos state” .

As for Senator Dino, only one- group – Kogi Women, expressed support for him.
