ENCOMIUM Weekly gathered that the two lovers who their off and on relationship has become public discourse on the internet got married on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at Ikoyi Registry, Ikoyi, Lagos, with family and few friends in attendance.
ENCOMIUM Weekly’s attempt to confirm the marriage tale from Toke Makinwa was, however, abortive. Rather than giving us an affirmative yes or no, she just kept on evading us.
When we called her on Friday, January 17, 2014 evening, this was how the conversation went:
Hello, good evening.
Hello, good evening.
You sound sleepy, I hope I did not disturb your sleep?
Yes, call me back later.
On Saturday, January 18, 2014, we called her again. This was how the conversation went:
Hello, good morning.
Hello, good morning.
Yeah, yeah but I am in the middle of an interview now. Can you call back?
We just want you to confirm if it is true you and Maje are married now?
I cannot confirm anything, call me back.
When do you suggest I call you back? (The line went dead)
Few minutes later she called back.
Hello, I am sorry the phone went off. I am conducting an interview now. Call me back in two hours time.
Three hours later.
Hello, good afternoon.
I called you this morning and you said I should call you back two hours later.
She is actually doing an interview right now. This is her PA speaking. (There were lot of voices in the background).
Yeah, she is doing an interview right now.
But that was what she told us more than two hours ago.
Her time is fully booked. She has a lot of things to do. You know what, she will give you a call. I will make sure she gives you a call in the next one and a half hours. I promise you that.
Alright, I will appreciate that.
That was the last time Toke or her supposedly PA answered our call. She refused to pick our several calls later.
But from the look of things the marriage tale is true and Toke seemed to be basking in the publicity that the news of her marriage has generated on the internet which explains her tweet on Saturday, January 18, 2014, which read thus: “I woke up to 1,250 missed calls this morning. I hope I am safe.”
ENCOMIUM Weekly also gathered that a small wedding dinner party was organized for Toke and Maje by their friends, Abi and Funke Kuku, at their home.
Toke Makinwa had granted an interview to Sunday Punch of December 15, 2013, in which she announced the death of her 12 year romantic relationship with Maje Ayida.
This is what she said in the interview, “I am not under any pressure to get married. It’s the society that puts pressure on women not minding that divorce rates are high. I was once in a long term relationship with Maje Ayida and it has come to an end. I think it’s unfair for me to speak about our relationship because he is not here to defend himself. He is an amazing guy but it was not meant to be.
“It’s strange being single again but I am taking it one step after the other. One of the mistakes I made in my last relationship is that we dated for a long time. They were amazing years but they were also long 12 years. When you are faithful to someone, know what you can tolerate. My Mr. Right has to be God fearing, who would not do certain things because he is God fearing. He has to understand what I do and must not be selfish in anyway.”
Prior to her Sunday Punch interview, Toke and Maje had already done their introduction and engagement. It was their registry marriage that was supposed to take place but which could not hold then because Maje refused to turn up.
So, it was therefore surprising to many when the same registry marriage was announced on Friday, January 17, 2014, to have taken place on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Ikoyi Registry, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Toke Makinwa is an on-air personality with Rhythm 93.7 FM. She and Nanya anchor the radio station’s Morning Ride show. A graduate of English Literature from University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. She also has a v-log called Toke Moments, where she talks about relationship.
Maje Ayida, the groom, is a fitness/wellness expert and entrepreneur.
