1. POLICE TIGHTENS SECURITY AT UNIMAID
The Borno State Police Command has sent 3, 000 policemen to Maiduguri and other areas affected by the Boko Haram sect. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Victor Isuzu says the measure will help enhance the state’s security network.
He explained further that the command had taken a great step to tackle security issues in the state. He charged the people to be vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agents in order to discharge their duties effectively.
2. AREGBESOLA CONGRATULATES PDP SENATOR-ELECT, ADEMOLA ADELEKE
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola has congratulated the Osun-west senator elect, Ademola Adeleke over his victory. He also thanked his supporters for their commitment, stating that “democracy has won and we respect the people’s choice.”
It was announced by INEC in the early hours of Sunday, that the PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke, the younger brother of late senator Isiaka Adeleke, polled the total of 97,480 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Mudashir Hussein with the total votes of 66,116.
3. ASUU REJECTS NEW TUITION FEES
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the recent increment in tuition fees made by most Nigerian universities. It described the recent development as an attempt by government to deprive children of the poor of quality education.
It called on government to dedicate at least 26 percent of its budget to funding education, so that many students will not be deprived and forced to drop half way.
4. POLICE SACK 4 CORRUPT OFFICERS IN OGUN
Four police officers have been dismissed from the force after being found guilty of extortion and bribery. The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris approved the officers’ dismissal for extorting N50,000 from a man they arrested on a trump up charge.
It was recalled that the officers arrested a young man who was leaving the bank and termed him a “yahoo boy”. They gave him punishment and made away with the money he had gone to collect on behalf of his boss, saying it was payment for his bills. The four officers include one Inspector, one Sergeant and two Corporals.
5. WE’RE COMMITTED TO FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS – OSINBAJO
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has restated that Nigeria’s commitment to the fundamental principles of free and fair elections is the only way to ensure peace and stability in the country. Osinbajo made this known when he received the Steering Committee of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), at the presidential villa, Abuja.
The committee headed by Prof. Mahmood Yaqub disclosed that, ECONEC has decided to locate its secretariat permanently in Abuja to ensure that elections in West Africa do not lead to conflicts. Osinbajo acknowledged the ECONEC and pledged support from the Nigerian government.
6. TANKER DRIVERS TASK FASHOLA ON IMMEDIATE REPAIRS OF DAMAGED ROADS
Petroleum tanker drivers in Kaduna state have lamented over the bad state of highway routes across the country. The drivers called on the Minister of Works, Power and Housing to urgently focus at least on the roads that connect critical parts of the country.
Although they didn’t threaten any industrial actions should nothing be done fast, they promised to do something worse if their pleas are given deaf ears.
7. MUSLIM CONGRESS ADVOCATES CHANGE IN MINDSET OF NIGERIANS
The Muslim Congress (TMC) has called for a change of mindset among Nigerians. Speaking at its quarterly state of the nation congress, the group urged leaders of various ethnic groups to charge their youths to quit hate speeches that have dominated Nigeria in recent times.
While speaking on security, the Muslim Congress urged the Lagos state government to do all they can to rescue the Igbonla students and do all within its powers to stop the deadly Badoo cult group.
8. KIDNAPPER EVANS MOVED TO ABUJA CELL FOR TIGHTER SECURITY
Notorious kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onuamadike (Evans) is now at the VIP wing of the police cell at the Force Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Garki, in the Federal Capital Territory for further investigations in his case.
The relocation of Evans created tensed atmosphere as it was believed that Evans had escaped from police custody. The force headquarters said in a statement signed by Force PRO, CSP Jimoh Moshood: “Evans is in police custody in Abuja and would be arraigned in a Lagos court alongside other members of his gang on completion of investigation.” He advised the public to disregard all media reports that he has vanished.
9. FAYOSE RECALLS 6 OUT OF 16 SACKED COMMISSIONERS
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state who dismissed 16 state executive council members last week, has recalled 6 out of them. In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Publicity and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose directed that the six sacked commissioners should resume their duty posts, Monday, July 10.
According to the statement, the remaining 10 commissioners will be appointed in due course. He called on the people of the state to be patient, while assuring to raise a good team that will give the people the deserved dividends of democracy.
10. OGBEH DISMISSES CRITICISMS
The Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh had over the weekend dismissed criticism of the country’s yam export, insisting that the move was done in the nation’s economic interest. He urged Nigerians to do away with fears of possible yam shortage, adding that it was considered before the decision to export yam was made known.
Mr. Ogbeh said already local chemical productions are being assessed to eradicate army worms that have infested maize farms across the country. He further urged Nigerians there would not be food shortage, that the move will be economically beneficial to Nigeria.
