NLC CALLS OFF NATIONWIDE STRIKE
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its national strike. The action which kicked off on Wednesday, failed to gain much traction.
Speaking with journalists on Sunday, Ayuba Wabba, president of the NLC said that the union decided to suspend the action after making wide consultations. However, the Congress commends all Nigerians for their understanding and support.
BUHARI CANCELS TWO-DAY STATE VISIT TO LAGOS
President Muhammadu Buhari has canceled his two-day official state visit to Lagos. The visit which would have seen the president inaugurating a number of projects would have started today and ended tomorrow.
The special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina confirmed the development. Adesina disclosed that Buhari would be represented by vice president Yemi Osinbajo. He, however, did not give any reason for the last minute cancellation of Buhari’s trip.
ARMY GENERAL DEAD, OTHERS INJURED IN YOBE CAR CRASH
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Muhammad Aliyu, was involved in a ghastly auto crash along Damaturu, Maiduguri road in Yobe state with some other officers.
Yobe state deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, state police commissioner Zanna Muhammad were among the early sympathisers at the general Sani Abacha specialist hospital where the victims were brought.
‘CALL YOUR PEOPLE TO ORDER’, FAYOSE TELLS BUHARI
The governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has beckoned on president Muhammadu Buhari to call Fulani herdsmen to order after suspected herdsmen attacked Oke Ako in Ikole local government area of the state, killing two residents of the town and injuring others.
Fayose described the rampaging herdsmen as ‘agents of the devil that must be fished out and punished accordingly’. He told the president to stop paying lip service to the herdsmen menace. He further stated that President Buhari should call his people to order because this is Ekiti, and as a matter of fact, Ekiti people have the rights to defend themselves.
WHY WE REMOVED SHERIFF AS PDP CHAIRMAN – GOV. WIKE
The Chairman of the 2016 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Convention Planning Committee and Rivers state governor, Nyeson Wike has disclosed that the party removed Ali Modu Sheriff on Saturday as the party’s national chairman because his leadership was destabilizing the party.
Gov. Wike further stated that, all along, the crisis has been about the former acting chairman whose emergence was strongly opposed. The governor informed party members that leaders would work towards maintaining unity amongst all members of the party.
13 DIE, OTHERS INJURED IN ABIA AUTO CRASH
About 13 persons died on Sunday after a commercial bus en route from Enugu state had a head-on collision with a trailer at Ofeme Junction on Umuahia road, Abia State. The trailer was said to be on top speed and lost control, veering into the path of the bus, few kilometers away from its destination.
It was gathered that the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Mrs. Stella Uche, the sector commander, FRSC Abia State command confirmed that 13 persons died and two victims rushed to federal medical centre, Umuahia for treatment. She further urged motorists to install speed limiters to avert accident and loss of lives.
LAGOS COMMUNITY LAMENTS NEGLECT, WANTS TRANSFORMER CONNECTED
Residents of Katola community in the Parafa area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have lamented over the negligence of electricity distribution and power failure in the community and want the government to address the issue.
A landlord, pastor Oni Ayodele said the residents had spent about N10 million on the project and urged the electricity company to write off their “crazy-bills” to compensate them. Mr. Aiyeni Akinola, a spokesperson for the company, said it is not possible to write off the bills because they have to pay for energy supplied from the National grid on daily basis.
APC GROUP CONDEMNS ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR DELEGATES
Ahead of the forthcoming governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo state, a group within the party has said it would not support the idea of online registration of delegates for the party’s primary.
According to the group, using the online registration system will cause acrimony. The group urged the party not to be overpowered by the alleged antics of some few elements in the party advocating for a fresh Congress for the APC’s primary scheduled for August 2016. They further ensured that, unity will be restored back in the state.
EFCC BEGINS AKANDE’S PROBE
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has started an investigation into the allegation of N300 million fraud against the Chairman, governing Council of Osun State college of education, Ila-Orangun, Mr. Niyi Akande.
The commencement of investigation into the alleged fraud was contained in a letter of invitation sent by the anti-graft agency to the Chairman CSCEOS, Mr. Sulaiman Adeniyi, who made the letter available in Osogbo on Sunday. However, the management denied the allegation of fraud against Akande and other officials accused of corruption.
TWO BORNO EMIRS RECLAIM PALACES RECAPTURED FROM BOKO HARAM
Two out of five traditional rulers in Borno state sacked from their palaces by Boko Haram insurgents, on Saturday returned to their domains after 17 months of exile.
Borno state deputy governor, Usman Mamman Durkwa, accompanied the emirs to their respective palaces in Askira/Uba local government area of Borno state, where huge jubilant crowds welcomed them.
