DOLPHINE PARK NAMED AFTER LATE BRAITHWAITE BY AMBODE

The governor of Lagos State, Governor Akinwumi Ambode who was ably represented by his deputy Dr. Idiat Adebule on Wednesday (April 27) named Dolphine Park after the late Tunji Braithwaite for his contributions to the political development of Nigeria. He made this known, at a special service of songs organized by the Braithwaite’s family in Lagos.

He commended  Braithwaite’s legal engagements in the defence of human rights and democratic norms as struggle for a better Nigeria. He promised that his bust will soon be commissioned at the Dolphine Estate Park, so that the memory of Braithwaite’s great contributions to politics and struggle for a better Nigeria will linger forever in our memory.

 

PDP NEC MEETING HOLDS TODAY

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  will hold its National Executive Committee (NEC)  meeting today (Thursday, April 28) so as to consider and adopt the report of the zoning committee for national offices. The zoning committee met yesterday in Abuja to submit its report to the National Working Committee (NWC), which will further submit it to various organs of the party before final presentation and adoption by NEC.

The committee, however, met in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and maintained the national chairmanship to the North-East, hence the rescheduled of another meeting this week, which according to the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh was to hold in Uyo but was moved to Abuja.

 

BUHARI MEETS WITH WORLD BANK MD

President Muhammadu Buhari held a meeting which lasted for about an hour with the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the world Bank, Missus Sri Indrawati who is on a visit to Nigeria. She held a press conference with state house correspondents, discussing the need to improve Nigeria’s economy.

Missus Indrawati said she looks forward to Nigeria having a good and transparent budget that will proffer solutions to all the challenges Nigerians are undergoing right now. She promised that her organization will help in anyway to deliver good and quality governance as well as support the economy in the area of infrastructure and agriculture.

 

PRESIDENT GAVE ASSURANCE TO END HERSDMEN ATTACK

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday promised Nigerians to put an end to the attacks by the herdsmen across the country.  This was contained in a statement available to journalists by Garba Shehu, his senior special assistant on media and publicity.

Buhari adviced all Nigerians to remain calm in the face of the attacks and be rest assured that his administration will continue to be committed in ensuring the safety of lives and property in all parts of the country. President Buhari has further ordered the Inspector general of police,  Mr. Solomon Arase to take urgent steps as regards securing the nation and investigate the recent attack at Ukpabi Nimbo in Enugu state.

 

METUH’S TRIAL ADJOURNED TILL MAY 17

Following Metuh’s ill-health, a federal high court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the trial of the National publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh till May 17. Metuh appeared in court yesterday, dressed in dark blue kaftan after a brief illness on Tuesday.

He was to call his second defense witness on Wednesday but his lawyer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) submitted that his client was not physically fit and sought an adjournment for two weeks, of which Justice Abang immediately adjourned the trial till May 17. Metuh told journalists that he was involved in an accident and was currently on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja.

 

FULANI HERDSMEN TAKE HOSTAGE IN DELTA

The residents of Obiaruku community, Ukwani local government area, Delta state were gripped with fear as eight persons working on a farmland in the community were held hostage for hours by suspected Fulani herdsmen who brutalized them but were later released following tensions surrounding the community.

Chika Uwabuofu, the youth leader of the community disclosed that they were held hostage and manhandled because four of their cows were killed and butchered in the neighbourhood as the Fulani were using their cows to destroy their crops.  On account of this, the Fulani herdsmen were therefore given three days to leave the community.

 

LABOUR PROPOSES N56, 000 WAGE TO FG

The president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Ayuba Wabba  on Wednesday proposed a new minimum wage of N56, 000 to the federal government. He made this comment while speaking with journalists, saying that the economy was in bad shape and the law made it clear that a review was overdue since the Nigerian workers had not faired well in the last one year.

He further explained that, the minimum wage was implemented to ensure that workers were not meant to earn below what could sustain them. Stressing out the need for government to make a better policy of reviewing the minimum wage every five years, he said that it would be difficult to fight corruption without taking care of the workers.

 

APC GIVES CONDITION FOR THE NEXT RIVERS RERUN ELECTIONS

The All Progressives Congress has given conditions that it will not be part and parcel in the next election until there is a clear security report that all the small arms in the state have been mobbed out completely. Chief Segun Oni, the National Deputy Chairman of the party spoke on the inconclusive election, stressing that security must be restored before talking about any election.

Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, Rivers APC chairman lamented that it is very pathetic what is happening in Rivers state now, accusing  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor in the state of running a country of his own. He added that, the ordeal in the state is uncalled for, as the governor has the mindset to do whatever pleases him. He therefore warned that, if the peace and tranquility of the state is not restored, no rerun election in the state.

 

FATHER BUTCHERS THREE CHILDREN

Idi Mamman, a native of Gorun Bandiremi village, Yeldu local government area of Kebbi state set his community on fire when he butchered his three children including a three-month old baby. He was said to have used a machete to carry out the nefarious act on his children aged four, three and three months old with blood flowing all over the place in a broad day light.

After committing the act, he however jumped into a nearby well but was immediately brought out by the angered villagers and was rushed to a psychiatric hospital at Jega where he is currently monitored by the police till he recovers. A top police officer at the state Police officer said Idi would face murder charges whenever he is fit to stand trial.

 

MASSOB GIVES FG 30 DAYS ULTIMATUM

The Federal Government has been given a 30 day ultimatum by the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) to put a stoppage to the worrisome attacks by Fulani herdsmen on harmless Nigerians in the southeast or face the wrath of the law, following the increased destructions by the herdsmen.

Sunday Okereafor who is the national director of information of MASSOB, in an interview with newsmen in Aba, lamented that the federal government was not doing anything to stop the attack. That MASSOB is worried over the menace since the president came to power. He further stated that, they are not saying Buhari is their sponsor,  but his silence over the attacks is suspicious and as a matter of fact, MASSOB is giving Buhari a 30-day ultimatum to stop the attacks or face the wrath.
