OSINBAJO TASKS GOVERNORS TO PROTECT CITIZENS, AVOID DIVISIVE STATEMENT

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has charged the 36 governors of the Federation to see it as a point of duty to protect their citizens and avoid making divisive statements. Though the meeting was held behind closed doors at the State House banquet hall, Osinbajo expressed disappointment over recent hate speeches credited to youths from Northern Nigeria and in the South East.

Osinbajo told the governors to curb insecurity in their domain and not allow issues to degenerate before they act. He also charged them to remain in unity with one another, irrespective of party affiliation for the betterment of the country.

 

MY RECALL MOVE, A COMEDY OF ERROR – DINO MELAYE

Senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye has described his recall process as a hoax. His constituents in Kogi West Senatorial District on Wednesday submitted a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) demanding the recall of Dino Melaye from the Senate.

The lawmaker noted that many appointees of the Kogi state government will go to jail over forgery. Melaye who described the move as “a comedy of errors” also said dead people’s name were on the recall register.

 

POLICE CONFIRM SEVEN DEAD IN MAMBILLA

Taraba state Command has confirmed seven people dead in a renewed crisis between Fulani herdsmen and residents of Mambilla in Sardauna local government area. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Babas has sent additional security personnel to the areas.

Speaker of the Taraba state House of Assembly, Peter Abel Diah, called for dialogue among residents of the state to end the lingering crisis between the both parties. Some community leaders have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Fulani settlement in Nguroje and other villages.

 

ENGINEERS URGED TO ADOPT PROPER USE OF INTERNET

The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Apapa Branch, has advised professional engineers to adopt proper use of Information Communication Technology.

Experts at the group’s business luncheon focused on business infrastructure and spoke on the need to continually deploy technology to address challenges facing access to the internet and all forms of engineering activities.

 

NIGERIA TO OVERTAKE USA AS WORLD’S THIRD MOST POPULOUS COUNTRY – UN

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, has projected Nigeria to be the world’s third most populous country by the year 2050. According to the report entitled, “World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision”, the agency said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population, just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people.

The report said, “By 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which currently ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the United States.”

 

POLICEMAN ALLEGEDLY CAUGHT ON TAPE EXTORTING MONEY WITH POS IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday arrested and detained a policeman attached to the Makinde Police Division over allegation of extortion.

The man, whose identity was concealed in a seven-second footage recorded by a female motorist, was shown holding what looked like a Point of Sale (POS) terminal. He was seen taking an Automated Teller Machine card from a man who had disembarked from a motorcycle.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous – Cole, said the command was aware of the video, adding that the policeman has been arrested and detained.

 

NLC ACCUSSES RICH NIGERIANS OF TAX EVASION

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday accused multinational companies operating in Nigeria and wealthy citizens of evading tax. Its President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba spoke at the opening of a workshop on “Tax Justice and Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs)” organised by the congress.

It was organised in collaboration with the Public Service International, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Abuja.

He said halting illicit financial flows, non-payment of taxes, corruption in their place, instituting responsive governance would tame poverty and inequality.

Wabba said: “In the context of Nigeria, the burden of payment of tax is squarely on the workers and they call it ‘pay as you earn’. Before you are paid, the tax is already removed and therefore, the rich and the powerful feast on our commonwealth, which is the tax we contribute.

 

5 DIE IN KATSINA STAMPEDE WHILE BEGGING FOR ALMS

Five persons have been confirmed dead in a stampede while residents were collecting N500 alms in Katsina State. Those that lost their lives included four minors and one 40-year-old woman who were collecting “Zakkat” from one Kamal Ma’a Gafi.

However, Police in the state confirmed the incident and said it had arrested Ma’a Gafi, who was giving the alms. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gambo Isah, also said the incident left 15 persons with injuries.

The tragedy happened when hundreds of the alms seekers gathered at the Rafin Dadi residence of Kamal Ma’a Gafi and began a stampede while struggling to get N500 alms. He said Gafi is currently in Police custody and that investigation into the matter is ongoing.

 

MASSOB BLASTS IGBO GOVERNORS FOR WEARING HAUSA ATTIRE

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has said that there is nothing patriotic about Igbo governors wearing Hausa/Fulani attires to public functions. MASSOB made the assertion in a communiqué issued on Wednesday, June 21.

Uchenna Madu, leader of MASSOB berated the governors of Ebonyi and Enugu states, Dave Umahi and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, respectively, for putting on Hausa/Fulani attire at the recent meeting between Igbo leaders and the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa. Madu said the dressing was not proper at such a crucial meeting when the worries of the Igbos were to be tabled. He stressed that that singular act had cast doubt on their South East Governors ability to represent the interests of the Igbo.

 

CBN ORDERS LENDERS TO MAINTAIN STATUS QUO ON ETISALAT INDEBTEDNESS

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday directed the consortium of 13 banks involved in Etisalat Nigeria’s $1.2 billion loan to suspend further action on the indebtedness, including taking over ownership or management of the company.

The directive came directly from the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who spoke to the banks’ Chief Executives via phone while they were meeting to discuss the next move in resolving the issue. However, the banks’ CEOs had agreed to issue a joint statement to explain their position and objectives with respect to the $1.2 billion loan.
