KANU’S BID TO REGAIN FREEDOM SUFFERS MORE SETBACK

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Wednesday, dismissed an appeal brought by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director, Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. It would be recalled that Kanu and two other pro-Biafra agitators had gone before the court to challenge what they called strange procedure before Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court also declined to order the release of the defendants on bail on the premise that allegations against them are grievous and serious. Justice Aboki, while reading the lead judgment, said it was not in doubt that the 1st defendant Kanu, has dual citizenship as he could jump bail if released from detention.

 

FG DECLARES MONDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY

The Federal Government has declared Monday, May 30 as public holiday to celebrate the 2016 democracy day. The minister of interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtf) made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government on Wednesday in Abuja.

Dambazau congratulated Nigerians on the attainment of one year in office of President Muhammadu Buhari and enjoined all to continue to support the president in his sustained effort to build a peaceful, enduring and democratic legacy.

 

POLICE NAB FIVE SUSPECTS

The Nigerian Police Force has arrested five of the suspects involved in the midnight raid on Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state, yesterday, as operatives of the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) based on credible technical intelligence swooped on them.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, has expressed satisfaction over the patriotism and professionalism with which the members of the force have carried out in their duties so far. The Inspector-General of Police assured Nigerians that the police will remain dynamic and creative in formulating new strategies for fighting crimes and urge Nigerians to continue to support the force.

 

BUHARI’S ONE YEAR IN OFFICE IS A ‘COLOSSAL WASTE’  – FAYOSE

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has further lambasted the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari over the status of the nation’s economy, particularly the current hike in pump price of petrol. According to the governor, Buhari’s one year in office is a colossal waste.

The governor disclosed that the government is indirectly collecting N58.50 naira tax from suffering Nigerians on each litre of petrol they buy. He further warned that if nothing is done urgently, the economy of Nigeria will collapse.

 

DOGARA INVITES ADEOSUN TO DEBATE ON ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION TODAY

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has invited Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, to appear before the house during plenary, today, to debate on the diversification of the Nigerian economy. Turaki Hassan, spokesman to the speaker, said the Finance Minister’s appearance before the lawmakers is in continuation of the sectoral debates on the growth of the economy.

The Minister’s Thursday appearance will be the fifth in a series of debates on how to diversify Nigeria’s oil-based economy. The initiative, themed ‘sectoral debates’ is part of the legislative agenda of the 8th National Assembly.

 

EVIDENCE WE TENDERED AGAINST SARAKI WAS INCOMPLETE –  EFCC WITNESS TELLS COURT

The trial of the Senate President, senator Bukola Saraki resumed at the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday with the first prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas, admitting that some of the evidences he tendered before the Tribunal against Saraki were incomplete.

At the resumed hearing, Wetkas, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alleged that Saraki did not declare property he bought in 1993 during his assets declaration of 2003. He disclosed that Saraki acquired the property through his company, Carlyed Properties Limited.

 

NLC ASSURES ON SIGNING IMPLEMENTABLE MINIMUM WAGE AGREEMENT

The Joe Ajaero-led faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) said on Wednesday that Labour would not sign any agreement on a new minimum wage, if it was implementable. According to the NLC factional leader, the ability to pay the proposed new wage is the purpose of any minimum wage agreement, stressing that no Labour leader will sign an agreement that cannot be realistic.

He said that since his group proposed N90, 000 while the Ayuba Wabba-led group demanded N56, 000, government had the responsibility to come out with its own position. Also speaking Mr. Igwe Achese, President, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) said, Labour will ensure that the N5 trillion palliatives promised by the government are implemented to stop the pains of Nigerians from the withdrawal of subsidy.

 

PDP SLAMMED GOVERNOR AMBODE

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos has accused the All Progressives Congress – led state government of allegedly spending N3.2 billion to do a face-lift of the state in preparation of the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The PDP slammed governor Akinwunmi Ambode particularly for placing flags and pictures around the areas marked for the passage of the president. In a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the PDP in the state, Gani Taofik, described the preparation for the aborted visit of the president as fraud and that the APC is too haphazard in governance.

 

SUSPECTED CULTISTS KILLS OPC MEMBER, POLICE ARREST TWO

The Lagos State police command has arrested two suspected cult members, Makinde Quadri and Yusuf Ayinla of the Aiye Confraternity for allegedly killing a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, 30-year old Daniel Alabi, while talking with a friend in the Bariga Area of Lagos State.

They were, however, arrested by the Bariga policemen but was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba. Although the defendants’ pleas were not taken, they were however remanded in prison pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. The case was adjourned till June 10, 2016.

 

APC NEEDS UNITY TO DEFEAT PDP – OKE

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo state, Chief Olusola Oke  in a statement on Wednesday, has said the party must be united in order to defeat the ruling People’s Democratic Party in the state. Oke however appealed to the leadership of the party to pick a credible and experience aspirant as the candidate for the forthcoming governorship election slated for November.

Oke, a former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, expressed optimism that the PDP would be defeated in the governorship election in a statement on Wednesday. He said, he has been inviting people to his house in Akure to talk to them about the need for the party to pick a candidate that can win the governorship election of the party.
