EKITI LOSES SIX DOCTORS

The Ekiti State Government had declared three days of mourning in the state following a tragic incident that has claimed the lives of six doctors in an auto crash on their way to Sokoto for a free medical mission organized by Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), just a few kilometers to Kaduna.

The state governor, Ayodele Fayose, lamented bitterly over the incident as a monumental loss not only to the people of Ekiti State but to Nigerians. He pleaded that all flags are to be flown at half-mast as the state will mourn the victims on TuesdayWednesday and Thursday.

 

BUHARI URGES AFRICAN LEADERS

President Muhammadu Buhari at an audience on Monday in Abuja with the foreign minister of Equatorial Guinea, Mr. Agapito Mba Mokuy, had enjoined African leaders to work harder, to ensure social justice for all their citizens in order to achieve greater peace and political stability in their countries without interference.

The president further stated that, Nigeria will continue to work with Equatorial Guinea and other nations so as to uphold the African Union and its various organs for the good of the continent.

 

TWO MEN ARRAIGNED FOR STEALING IN CHURCH

The Ogun state police has charged two men, Akapo Paul, aged 73 and Johnson Shorinnolu aged 63 for stealing 14 million dollars belonging to the West African Christian Mission, Ota, when they conspired as signatories to the bank account of the church.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, they were however, admitted to bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties, residents within the jurisdiction of the court and should be gainfully employed. Though, Chief Magistrate, A.  I.  Adelaja had directed the sureties to swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payments to Ogun government, but however, the Magistrate had adjourned the case till May, 20 for hearing.

 

JONATHAN CALLS FOR STRENGTHENING OF DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the former Nigerian president was yesterday at the Mayor’s office in Newark, New Jersey, where he spoke to friends of Africa coalition on the theme of strengthening democracy and elections. He further talked on some of the legacies of his administration.

Jonathan urged Africans to value the process of election and not the product of the process, so that, there would be hope for a better tomorrow. He added that, he was fulfilled during his tenure as Nigeria’s president, the nation emerged as the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the world.

 

OKOROCHA VERSUS ICPC

Rochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo State, has spoke vehemently to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission to bring out details of its findings on disbursement of the bailout funds the state had received from the Federal Government, since he had been accused of using the fund to pay worker’s salaries in the state.

The governor instead, accused the ICPC of not being fair with the truth on this matter. He however, lamented how the ICPC had arrived at its conclusion but he stated, transfers were made to accounts not related to that of salaries as all the workers in the state were paid all their arrears in December 2015.

 

BUHARI TO MEET WITH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

As the National Assembly prepares to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue of the grey areas of the 2016 budget, it is of a clear indications that the president won’t meet personally with the National Assembly as he plans to send a representative.

Ali Ndume, the Senate leader had on Monday said, the leadership of the National Assembly would however meet with the president this week to resolve all the issues arising from the 2016 budget between the legislature and the executive but some of the principal officers of the two chambers, traveled out. He further stated that the meeting would be held this week and the president will thereafter sign the budget.

 

20 PERSONS KILLED IN ENUGU

Twenty person in Ukpabi Nimbo community in the Uzo – Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state were killed during an attack on Monday by fulani herdsmen. The community was invaded and stormed in the early hours of Monday with over 100 armed cattle rearers.

The invading cattle rearers armed themselves with dangerous weapons. A Catholic church was set ablaze leaving villagers escape for their dear life to the nearby town. The people urge the government to come to their rescue as the commissioner of police Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu, had led other officers of command to the affected areas.

 

MINISTER EXPLAINS WHY THE HIKE IN FUEL SCARCITY LINGERS

Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State (Petroleum) in a town hall meeting held in Lagos, has said that, 30 per cent of the fuel supplied is diverted to neighbouring countries and people making money out of the agony of Nigerians. He said, they are working to put off the lingering fuel crisis as a result of lack of transparency on ground.

The host governor ably represented by his deputy Mrs. Idiat Adebule, said the town hall meeting was a way to get a feedback from the people, urging them to exercise patience and show understanding with the government,  as they are working on ideas to solve the problems on ground and encouraging Nigerians that the results of planning will soon materialized.

 

GOV. MIMIKO SWEARS IN NEW ONDO LG

At a swearing-in ceremony for 18 chairmen in Akure, governor Mimiko informed the public that his intention to dissolve the existing local government administration was as a result of illegality constituted in the system since 2009.

He adviced the Chairmen to work together with the career officers as well as councilors and traditional rulers so as to embrace exemplary leadership and maintain the peace and tranquility of the people. The Chairman of the Ondo state Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. olugbenga Ige presented certificates of return to the Chairmen at the commission’s office in Akure, with top government officials in attendance.

 

NIGERIA TO HELP SIERRA LEONE IN IMPLEMENTING SHIPPERS’ COUNCIL

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Mr. Hassan Bello, has said he received a delegation of the Sierra Leone maritime administration at the council’s headquarter in Lagos to join hands with them and set up the council, so as to make Africans predict the terms of trade within the region.

The NSC boss stated that, since the African countries do not own ships to predict the terms of trade in the region, the council is currently collaborating with the Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM)  to start with two ships to foster trade within the west central Africa sub-region.
