1. INEC CONTINUES WITH DINO’S RECALL DESPITE COURT RULING
The Independent National Electoral Commission has posted notice of verification for the recall of Dino Melaye, lawmaker representing Kogi west senatorial district. This was released despite a high court ruling asking INEC and the lawmaker to maintain “status quo” pending the hearing of a motion filed by Melaye to seek an interlocutory injunctions.
But INEC says the verification for Melaye’s recall would hold across all polling units in the senatorial district, August 19. According to the Electoral Act, one-half of the number of registered voters in a constituency is required for the recall of a lawmaker.
2. EFCC FILES 19 CHARGES OF CORRUPTION AGAINST JUSTICE FISHIM
The Lagos state High Court has fixed July 12 for the arraignment of a serving judge of the National Industrial Court, Justice Agbadu Fishim, who was charged with unlawful enrichment. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission filed 19 charges of corruption against the judge.
The anti-graft agency alleged that Justice Fishim received an aggregate of N3.5M from seven Senior Advocates of Nigeria, one other Lagos-based lawyer and one law firm between 2013 and 2015.
3. KADUNA APC FACTION PASSES VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN EL-RUFAI
A faction of the All Progressive Congress in Kaduna state has passed a vote of no confidence on the El-Rufai led government in the state. They lamented that his government is throwing the party to the woods as a result of his anti-people’s policies.
The chieftain of the party said something has to be done fast to save the party. They promised to fight the governor and assured to keep the governor in check, until he changed from his anti-people’s policies.
4. RAIL DEVELOPMENT WILL SUPPORT GOVT’S DIVERSIFICATION AGENDA – AMAECHI
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, during an assessment of the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan rail project asserted that Nigeria’s rail development will greatly support government diversification agenda and trade facilitation. Amaechi who boarded the train from the Iddo rail terminal in Lagos and proceeded along the project area met with the governor of Osun state, Ibikunle Amosun, where they deliberated on issues relating to the rail development project.
The Minister is confident that government would deliver on its promise of an efficient rail service system between Lagos and Ibadan within the projected time frame of December 2018, to help tackle the country’s transportation problems.
5. WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE – NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress has lamented over the high cost of living for an average Nigerian, describing it as worrisome. At a recent meeting, the Nigeria Labour Congress, President and other labour leaders, said the recent rise in crimes and social vices is due to unemployment and low circulation of money in the country.
They said that Nigerians are running out of patience, and to avoid constant protests, government should speed up the review of the minimum wage process.
6. IZE-IYAMU CONGRATULATES GOVERNOR OBASEKI
Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the September 28, 2016 governorship election in Edo state, Pastor Ize-Iyamu has congratulated governor Godwin Obaseki over Monday’s Supreme Court ruling which affirmed Obaseki’s election. Ize-Iyamu, whose petition was dismissed for lack of merit, assured the governor of his goodwill.
In a press statement issued in Benin city, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said the Supreme Court verdict has brought an end to his struggle for the office of the governor of Edo state.
7. PDP WILL WIN 2018 OSUN GUBER POLL – ADELEKE
The senator-elect for Osun west, Ademola Adeleke has described his victory as a new dawn for democracy. At a news conference in Ede, Adeleke said the election was a pointer that PDP will be victorious in the 2018 governorship election in the state.
Adeleke who scored 97, 480 votes won nine out of the ten local government areas where the elections was held.
8. ONDO TRADITIONAL RULER URGES HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TO RESOLVE MONARCH GRADING CRISIS
A prominent traditional ruler in Ondo state, the Olowa of Igbaraoke, Oba Francis Agbede has charged members of the state House of Assembly to find a lasting solution to the issue of grading of monarchs in the state.
The monarch gave the charge while hosting the leadership of the state House of Assembly led by its speaker, Bamidele Oloyelegun. He described a situation where a local council has more than four first class kings in the council of Obas in the state as injustice.
9. BENUE GOVT. TO HELP YAM FARMERS IN NEW AGRICULTURAL POLICY
The Benue state government says it is ready to assist its farmers take advantage of the country’s new agricultural policy to increase yam exports to the United Kingdom and other countries. He added that the state’s anti-grazing bill which was signed into law must first take effect, before it can be achieved.
The governor said he is confident Benue alone can provide up to 49 per cent of yams needed for export, noting that why farmers in his state had under produced in the last past years was because there was no ready market.
10. APC REFUSES TO ACCEPT DEFEAT OF OSUN SENATORIAL ELECTION
The All Progressives Congress has refused to accept and believe that it lost the Osun west senatorial by-election to the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), last Saturday. The acting chairman of the APC in Ondo state, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, said he didn’t see it as a loss for his party, instead APC won the election.
The chairman, while receiving defectors from PDP to APC yesterday, stated that the victory recorded in the election was not for the PDP but for the aggrieved members of the APC in the state. He further urged members of the party not to lose confidence, that there is still hope for a common man.
