TWO HERSDMEN SENTENCED TO 20YRS IMPRISONMENT 

A Delta state High Court sitting in Asaba yesterday jailed two fulani herdsmen, Hassan Abidu and Yakubu Salam. They were suspected to be members of the armed nomads terrorizing the people of Ibusa community.

The court found the herdsmen guilty on a two count charge of unlawful possession of firearms preferred against them by the Attorney General of the state. They were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each with hard labour and without an option of fine.

 

EX-GOVERNOR MODU SHERIFF IN ONE MAN RACE FOR PDP CHAIR

Embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff has been called upon yesterday to run as sole chairmanship candidate at the national convention scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Sheriff was endorsed by stakeholders, including the Board of Trustee (BoT) with various groups at a meeting, held at the party’s secretariat. The party also confirmed Senator Walid Jibrin as newly elected chairman of the BoT, with Chief Ojo Maduekwe as secretary.

 

EFCC TO INVITE FORMER PRESIDENT JONATHAN SOON

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has disclosed that the agency have been investigating and collating evidence against former President Goodluck Jonathan and other accomplices in the arms purchase scandal.

Magu stated that anybody involved in the scandal would be invited. It was discovered that a huge amount has been recovered so far, but they are still collecting the monies. Magu was further asked, if Jonathan would be called to appear at the EFCC, and he stated that, if he is guilty, he would be summoned.

 

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MEMBERS CLASH OVER KACHIKWU

Members of the House of Representatives were in limbo over a motion to admit Ibe Kachikwu, Minister of State for Petroleum into the green chamber to explain the reasons for the hike in the price of petrol from N86.50 to N145, but surprisingly, majority of the members chorused “nay”, protesting against allowing Kachikwu into the chamber.

The speaker who tried to calm the House was nervous, because both members in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) were in disarray. However, Leo Ogor suggested the house should go into an executive session, and his recommendation was taken.

 

ARMY ARRESTED SUSPECTED OIL PIPELINE ATTACKERS

Some suspected oil pipeline attackers have been apprehended yesterday. According to Reuters, the detainees were thought to be part of the Niger Delta Avengers. The avengers, however, said they are fighting for a greater share of oil profits.

Meanwhile, Buhari has extended an amnesty deal signed with militants in 2009 that step up funding for the region. But he has cut funding for the deal and canceled contracts to former militants to protect the pipelines they used to attack.

 

BUHARI, WIKE MEET BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday met briefly with Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike. The meeting was held behind closed door at the presidential villa in Abuja and started at about 2.00pm inside Buhari’s office.

Although, the reason behind the meeting was not known, Wike claimed that INEC was planning on releasing results of eight local government areas suspended previously, but he suspected INEC was playing funny pranks to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) manipulate the results, just to save the face of Amaechi, as APC did not win the election.

 

FORGET SHIPPING LINE, OBASANJO TELLS BUHARI

Speaking in Lagos on Monday during a two-day stakeholders’ conference on the maritime industry, former President, Olusegun Obasanjo had advised the Federal Government to forget shipping line, adding that the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) was highly corrupt and lack professionalism.

He further advised the president to distant himself from the maritime industry. The former president lamented that since we cannot perform like Singapore, we have to do better than what we are doing now.

 

FG THREATENS TO SHUT ABUJA AIRPORT OVER SAFETY CONCERNS

The Federal Government yesterday threatened to close down Abuja Airport, following its bad state. The minister of State, aviation senator Hadi Sirika at the 2016 Aviation stakeholders summit in Abuja, has said, the government would concession the Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano international airports in the first phase of his concession programme.

It was observed that the current facilities at the airports did not meet international standards and best practices in the aviation industry. According to Sirika, if the government is able to concession the four airports successfully in the first phase, it would pay attention to providing infrastructure and develop domestic airports.

 

ORTOM SIGNS 2016 BUDGET

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom yesterday signed into law the 2016 Appropriation bill of N150.7 billion. He explained that he would ensure compliance to its full implementation in the state. He pledge his administration’s commitment to transparency in all things entrusted in his hands.

The governor enjoined the people to be ready at all times to provide the necessary information that the Assembly members on overnight functions and journalists may request for in order to avoid speculations. Ortom who gave the assurance at the Benue peoples’ house, Makurdi, also pledge to provide good grounds for free operations of other arms of government.

 

LCCI CALLS FOR DIALOGUE BETWEEN LABOUR, GOVT

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) yesterday called on the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to dialogue for more effective communication following the proposed national strike by Nigeria Labour Congress.

Mrs. Nike Akande who is the president of LCCI said Nigeria economy is already in a very fragile state, with little capacity to take the shocks of any major dislocations. She further urged the Federal Government to immediately engage the leadership of Labour Union to come together and understand each other.
