1. PRESIDENT BUHARI TO PRESENT 2018 BUDGET TO NASS TODAY
President Muhammadu Buhari will on today, Tuesday 7, present the 2018 budget before the joint session of two chambers of the National Assembly. Mr. Buhari Had last week requested the indulgence of the two chambers of the National Assembly to allow him present the budget at 2pm today.
The president also had in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) presented to the National Assembly proposed the sum of N8.6 trillion for 2018 budget.
The proposed amount, which is exactly N8.595trn, represents about 15 percent increase from the 2017 budget, which was N7.44trn.
2. POLICE ARREST 10 SHI’ITE MEMBERS IN KANO
Kano State Police Command said it has arrested ten members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shi’ites, following a clash on Sunday.
Police said the five males and five females were arrested because their procession that led to the clash with police officers was banned. Police spokesman also denied that officers used live bullets.
3. WHAT FG IS SAYING ABOUT THE 26 DEAD NIGERIAN WOMEN FOUND REFRIGERATED ON SPANISH WARSHIP
The corpses of 26 dead Nigerian women were recently found refrigerated aboard a Spanish warship in the Italian coast city of Salerno. There are suspicions that they may have been sexually abused and murdered as they attempted to cross the Mediterranean.
Reacting to this development, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Matters, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged Nigerian youths to stop illegal migration through the Mediterranean or the desert.
She also revealed plans to unveil a comprehensive policy document to curb illegal migration.
4. I DID NOTHING WRONG – SARAKI REACTS TO PARADISE PAPERS LEAK
Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki has reacted to being named as benefiting from a tax haven, as leaked in the recent Paradise Papers. In a statement released on Monday, Saraki said he did nothing illegal in establishing Tenia Limited but did not claim that he declared the firm in his assets declaration form.
“Tenia Limited was incorporated in 2001, long before I ventured into politics and was elected to public office. This is just a paper company and therefore could not have been used to hide any asset.”
Meanwhile, the Senate president had fully complied with the law on assets declaration.
5. BOKO HARAM SECT ATTACKED ADAMAWA
Boko Haram terrorists on Monday attacked Bakin Dutse village in Adamawa state, as they advanced to Gulak, the headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area.
They were accosted by men of the Nigerian military who engaged them in heavy gunfire. Local vigilante groups also joined in the fight, assisting the army.
According to reports, both sides suffered heavy casualties with residents scampering away for safety. They are said to be hiding in bushes, hills and mountains around the area.
The Chairman of Madagali LGA, Alhaji Mohammed Yusuf, described the attack as “very heavy and likely to result in the loss of lives.”
6. EFCC ARRESTS EX-GOVS DANLADI, IDRIS WADA
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has picked up two prominent Nigerians who had served in government positions over some funds traced to them originating from ex-petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
According to reports, N860M was traced to the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada; and a former acting governor of Taraba State, Sani Danladi.
While N500m was traced to Wada, N450m was traced to Danladi.
Wada arrived the EFCC office around 12 pm on Monday and was still in custody around 9 pm.
Danladi was arrested and detained in Abuja last week and later released on bail to reliable sureties but asked to report to the EFCC Gombe zonal office for further investigation.
7. ONDO POLICE BOSS DIES IN AUTO CRASH
The Acting Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Yaba Police Division of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Aminu Mustapha, died on Monday in an auto crash.
Mustapha was said to have lost his life in the motor accident at the Omifon end of the Ondo-Ore Expressway, in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday.
It was gathered that the officer was travelling together with his son to visit his family when the accident occurred. However, the son survived the accident with injuries.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, said Mustapha’s death was a great loss to the command. He added that,
unlike what had been going around the town that the DPO died in a controversial circumstance, “Mustapha died in a fatal motor accident.”
8. OSHODI RESIDENTS PROTEST, DEMAND PREPAID METERS
Residents of Oshodi, Mafoluku, Shogunle and Ladipo area of Lagos state said they will resist outrageous bills and
want the management of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to install prepaid meters in their homes without further delay.
Protesting against what they described as Crazy billing resident came out en mass carrying placards with various inscriptions stressing that they will henceforth pay two thousand naira per meter until their demands are met.
The angry residents added that there will be no disconnection of electricity from either poles or transformers in the locality.
9. 24-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED FOR KILLING WIFE
The Police in Bayelsa State has arrested a 24- year -old man, Vincent Edwin, for allegedly killing his wife Joy, with a machete.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at Boro Camp, Kaiama, in the Kolokuma/Opukuma Local Government Area of the state.
Joy was said to have gone fishing with her neighbour, Juliet Philip when the husband attacked and killed her with the machete.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the killing which happened On November 5, 2017, at about 8. 30pm.
He said the suspect had been arrested and he had confessed to the crime, adding that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
10. GUNMEN ABDUCT LP NATIONAL CHAIR’S MUM
Four gunmen have abducted Mrs. Elizabeth Omotosho, the mother of the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Dr. Mike Omotosho.
Mike, who confirmed the kidnap of the 71- year -old woman to journalists on Monday, said she was abducted at her No 23, Lobalade Street, Tanke, Ilorin, Kwara State, residence between 7 pm and 8 pm on Sunday.
Mike said the Police headquarters in Abuja and Kwara State had been contacted on the abduction.
He appealed to members of the public with useful information that could lead to the rescue of his mother to contact the law enforcement agencies.
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr . Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the abduction of the woman.
He said the state police command had launched an investigation into the matter.
