1. ASUU ANNOUNCES SUSPENSION OF NATIONWIDE STRIKE
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), last night announced a conditional suspension of the strike it embarked upon five weeks ago.
But the union said that the suspension has time line for the Federal Government to implement what was contained in the memorandum the two parties signed.
Briefing journalists after a meeting with the Federal Government Negotiation Team, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi said should the government in her characteristic nature failed to implement the aggreement, the union will not hesitate to take appropriate action, adding that all the items on the list have a time line.
2. INEC RELEASES FRESH TIMETABLE FOR MELAYE’S RECALL
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released another timetable for the recall of Dino Melaye, lawmaker representing Kogi west senatorial district. Augusta C. Ogakwu, the commission’s secretary, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the new timetable, the recall process will commence on October 3, 2017, with the notice of verification. The last day for the submission by observers will take place October 5, while the publication of the list of accredited observers will commence October 9. The conduct of verification will take place on October 14 in all polling units in the district.

3. NIGERIA ARMY DIDN’T DECLARE IPOB A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION – BURATAI

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, has stated that the army did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a terror group as widely reported.
Speaking during the official launch of Operation Python Dance II in Abakaliki, Buratai argued that what the Defence Headquarters did was a pronouncement on IPOB and that the statement of the military gave room for the right steps to be taken on the matter.
He said FG’s action concerning IPOB was right and that the military did not over step its bound towards the protection of lives and properties in the country.
4. FOUR DEAD AS EXPLOSION ROCKS NNPC APAPA
There was a fuel explosion on Monday at the Petroleum Wharf in Apapa, Lagos State, which claimed four lives. According to reports, a vessel, Histria Ivory, was discharging petrol around 3am at the NNPC depot in the area when some hoodlums besieged it to scoop fuel spilling from the vessel.
Their activities caused an explosion, which resulted in the death of four people. Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, men of the Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigerian Navy were said to have been called when the jetty’s in-house fire unit could not handle the inferno which lasted for about one hour before it was put off.
NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, who has been fully briefed on the incident, described the occurrence as unfortunate, assuring the public that the NNPC has more than 1.6bn litres of petrol, enough to last for 48 days.
5. CHIEF WHIP BLASTS SARAKI FOR SAYING IPOB ISN’T A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION
The Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, has condemned Senate President Bukola Saraki for saying IPOB isn’t a terrorist organization.
According to him, Saraki’s declaration was “a mere political statement” that portrayed the nation’s number three citizen as “a controversial leader.”
Considering the attacks meted out to innocent Nigerians by the IPOB group in the South-East and indeed the nationalistic conduct of the northern governors and the prompt action they took to stop possible reprisals in the North, the Senate President’s statement was to say the least unnecessary.”
6. SUICIDE BOMBERS HIT BORNO, KILL 15
No fewer than 15 people were killed and at least 21 people injured
on Monday when two suicide bombers attacked a village, near Konduga in Borno State. The twin explosions occurred in Mashalari village, near Konduga.
The state emergency management agency confirmed the news of the attack . Mashalari village is near Konduga, one of the few villages in the outskirts of Maiduguri frequently attacked by Boko haram.
7. OSINBAJO STORMS SUPREME COURT
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Monday arrived Supreme Court to witness the conferment of the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on his brother, Akinlolu Osinbajo with 27 others including Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo.
Among the dignitaries at the event is former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu.
The conferment of the SAN rank on the lawyers was part of the events lined up as part of the ceremony marking the commencement of the new 2017/2018 legal year.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee had on July 6, announced Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, among the 30 successful candidates to be awarded the prestigious rank for this year.
8. NORTHERN GOVERNORS VISIT ABIA ON PEACE TOUR
A delegation of Northern Governors Forum visited Abia state to douse tension and promote peace in the region. The team led by the Chairman of the Forum, Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno also has Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto.
Other members of the team are Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Simon Lalong of Plateau states.
The Northern Governors will also visit Rivers and Imo states where they will meet with traditional and religious leaders and also confer with northerners resident in those states.
9. JONATHAN CONDEMNS BUHARI, SLAMS LAI MOHAMMED
Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the Muhammadu Buhari government over the show of force in the South East and South West concerning the crisis created by the agitation for the republic of Biafra by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
In a statement signed on his behalf by Reno Omokri, Jonathan said the Buhari government should note that Nigeria isn’t under a dictatorship.
“We want to advise the Buhari administration, which has announced plans to extend the military show of force to the South-South and the South-West through Operation Crocodile Smile, to tread with caution.
He also slammed Information Minister Lai Mohammed for saying the agitation for Biafra was caused by PDP’s loss of the 2015 election.
Jonathan said Mohammed had no moral right to cast aspersions as the minister had once criticised him for declaring Boko Haram a terrorist group.
10. 13 POLITICAL PARTIES PLAN MERGER
A total of 13 registered political parties in the country have agreed to collapse into one mega party to be known as Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). The interim national chairman of the proposed party, Dr. Onwunbuya Breakforth said on Monday while briefying newmen.
He said the merger was coming as a result of the ‘failure’ of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rescue Nigerians from the various challenges bedeviling the nation.
He, however, declined to mention the names of the parties, saying their names would be made public when INEC announced the registration of the new party.
