1. OSINBAJO FLIES TO LONDON ON BUHARI’S INVITATION
The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday left Nigeria for London to see the President shortly after he presided over the quarterly presidential business forum held at the Presidential Villa. It was discovered that the Acting President’s trip was at the instance of Buhari, following the ultimatum given by the House of Reps to confirm two ministers.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande said Osinbajo would meet Buhari in London and return to the country immediately after the meeting.
2. HOUSE OF REPS ORDERS MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO SEPARATE IRS FROM CRS
The House of Representatives has asked the ministry of education not to group subjects like Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Religious Studies (IRS) under Civic Education. At plenary on Tuesday, Beni Lar, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker from Plateau state, opposed the compulsory inclusion of religious education in the revised curriculum.
Lar charged his colleagues to look into the issue which has raised controversy in the country. After a debate, the Lower Legislative Chamber adopted the motion to ask the Ministry of Education not to merge the subjects.
3. EKWEREMADU SLAMMED KOGI ATTORNEY
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has blasted the Kogi state Attorney-General, Ibrahim Muhammad, for mis-advising governor Yahaya Bello of sponsoring paid advertorials in newspapers to criticize him.
The Kogi state governor had placed a three-page advertorial in newspapers, tarnishing Ekweremadu’s reputation over his contributions on the grounds of the Senate during the debate of Dino Melaye’s recall process. Angered Deputy Senate president charged the Attorney to respect his person because he has a doctorate degree in constitutional law. He called on the House to investigate who sponsored the advertorial and find a way of getting the money back to pay Kogi state salaries.
4. OSINBAJO APPROVES 19 JUDGES FOR NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COURT
The Acting president, Yemi Osinbajo has approved the appointment of 19 judges for the National Industrial Court, on the recommendation by the National Judicial Council.
A statement signed by the National Judicial Council’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, notified that the newly appointed judges will be sworn in on Friday at the Supreme Court, Abuja.
5. NNAMDI KANU’S TRIAL ADJOURNED TILL OCTOBER
The trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu has been adjourned by an Abuja Federal High Court to October 17, 2017. The IPOB leader who is facing charges of treason before the court is being tried alongside three others.
He was arrested in 2015 on an 11-count charge bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, but was later granted bail in April by Justice Binta Nyako on health grounds.
6. OYEGUN CAUSED APC’S LOSS IN OSUN – TIMI FRANK
A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress party, Timi Frank has called for the immediate resignation of the party’s chairman, John Oyegun. He lamented that the party’s chairman hasn’t been able to solve any crisis rocking the party.
Timi Frank laid the Osun state by-election which saw the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party to victory as an emphasis and appealed to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to immediately call for an emergency meeting to address the situations confronting the party.
7. FAYOSE DRAGGED TO COURT BY SACKED EKITI POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS
Political office holders from four statutory commissions in Ekiti state that were sacked by governor Ayodele Fayose on assumption of office have challenged their removal at the National Industrial Court in Akure. The officers who were formally appointed by governor Kayode Fayemi urged the court to order Fayose to pay their entitlement or reinstate them into their various offices.
Their counsel, Femi Falana (SAN) described the sack as unconstitutional. He noted that the decision of the Ekiti state government to relieve his clients of their appointments is illegal because such appointments are statutory in nature.
8. APC CHIEF SENT TO PRISON FOR DISTURBING PUBLIC PEACE
A chieftain of the APC, Fatai Oyedele was on Tuesday, July 11 remanded in Ilesa prison by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun state along with six others for disturbing public peace.
Police prosecutor, Chris Okafor said the seven men on Monday afternoon conspired to chant abusive song which were political and almost led to a breach of political peace. Although the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and applied for bail, the Chief Magistrate, Ayo Ayeni adjourned the case till July 18 for hearing.
9. GOV. OKOROCHA FACES CRITICISM FOR BANNING IMO MONARCHS FROM SPEAKING ENGLISH
Rochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo state has been undergoing hot criticism and condemnation for ordering traditional leaders in the state not to speak English language at functions and conduct activities in their palace in Igbo language.
He gave the directives while handing over letters of recognition and staff of office to 19 newly recognized traditional leaders in the state on Tuesday. Although the reason he gave the order seems logical, while many Nigerians welcome it as a good idea, others condemned Okorocha for making such proclamation. They said he shouldn’t give such speeches since he speaks English.
10. TENSION IN NORTH AS ACF, PRO-BUHARI GROUP CLASH OVER 2019 PRESIDENTIAL SLOT
There was tension at the premises of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna as some northerners under the aid of Buhari’s legacy implementation initiatives told the ACF that they must ensure that the north and President Muhammadu Buhari retained the presidency in 2019. But the ACF, the apex northern sociocultural group advised the pro-Buhari group which came on a courtesy visit to take their campaigns elsewhere because ACF is not a partisan group.
A visibly angry ACF’s vice chairman, Senator Abubakar Girei lectured the group, saying: “You don’t need to tell us about Buhari’s honesty because we know and that was why Nigerians voted for him. What you can do now is to bring out the legacies or achievements of Buhari which Nigerians don’t know, so that the people can appreciate him and his kind of character.”
