1. APC CALLS FOR P-SQUARE IMPRISONMENT FOR INSULTING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has ordered for the immediate arrest of Peter Okoye of P-square, over comments on the current administration. The call for the arrest ensued as the brothers via their Instagram pages, questioned the Federal Government’s purported move to ban the production of music videos abroad.
They said the Federal Government was trying to control what it never supported, adding that, one day a law would surface that will monitor how they sleep with their wives.
Reacting in a statement signed by the APC Youths National Secretary, Collins Edwin, the group described Peter Okoye as a “son of darkness.”
2. FANI-KAYODE WILL CONTEST PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMANSHIP
Former Minister of Aviation, and Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Femi Fani-Kayode, is set to emerge as the National Chairman of the PDP. Fani-Kayode’s Media Adviser, Jude Ndukwe, disclosed this on Tuesday morning.
He said Fani-Kayode would be competing with a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Bode George, the governorship candidate of the party in Lagos, in 2015, Jimi Agbaje, and a former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran.
He said: “It is far too early to make this decision, but I can tell you that there is a lot of pressure on him from various quarters to run for a key position on the National Working Committee of the party.”
3. MODU-SHERIFF DECLARED HIMSELF ANTI-CORRUPTION CZAR
The recently sacked National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu-Sheriff, has appointed himself the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, while vowing to go after all corrupt PDP members. Sheriff made this vow in a statement on Tuesday, by his spokesperson, Hon. Bernard Mikko.
“Never again will corrupt Politicians use the platform of our major political institutions to stardom. The party is for all and no one’s enterprise as government is conceived as an administrative state, where dishonest Politicians bask in democratic corruption,” Sheriff said.
Sheriff further pledged to address a World Press Conference, to point the way forward for his supporters nationwide.
4. STOP INEC, KOGI APC TELLS COURT
The Kogi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday served the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the notice of a lawsuit against the agency on Senator Dino Melaye’s recall process. The Kogi APC and 12 principal officers accused INEC of commencing Melaye’s recall process based on a fictitious petition, which contained names of dead persons.
The plaintiffs, the chairman and other principal officers of the APC in Kogi, filed the suit for themselves and on behalf of the party’s working committee.The plaintiffs also want a declaration that the purported petition submitted to INEC was incompetent, invalid, null, void and of no effect whatsoever, having written names of persons who are either dead, fictitious, non-existent or those from outside Kogi West constituency.
5. CHIEF JUSTICE ASSIGNS SUIT ON BUHARI’S HEALTH TO JUDGE
A suit seeking an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja compelling the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to appoint a medical panel to determine the health status of ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, has been assigned to Justice Abdukadir Abdu-Kafarati. The respondents to the suit are Saraki, the Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Although judges of various courts, including the Federal High Court, are to resume from this year’s vacation in September, no date has been given for hearing, the suit will likely fixed a date for hearing after the judges’ vacation.
6. SENATE GIVE UP ON CUSTOM BOSS WEARING UNIFORM
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has given the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs, Retired Colonel Hameed Ali, the free hand to wear whatever pleases him so far he ends the problem of smuggling in the country. The disclosure by the Senate President comes after the Nigerian Senate had earlier turned the Customs boss out twice for not wearing his uniform.
Hameed Ali who has never been seen in his uniform since he assumed office as the custom’s boss had stated in an interview months ago that he was appointed into office to tackle custom problems and not to wear uniform. The Senate President while speaking in the presence of Ali stated that the custom’s boss is allowed to wear whatever he deemed fit as long as he ends the problem of smuggling.
7. PDP TO HOLD NON-ELECTIVE SPECIAL CONVENTION AUGUST 12
The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that the party will convene a non-elective special convention to held on August 12, 2017. This was one of the decisions taken at the 74th PDP National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Also agreed at the meeting was the dissolution of the Jigawa and Benue states committees and parallel executives. The national caretaker committee was mandated to set up two committees which would be inaugurated immediately.
8. LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT BANS VACATION CLASSES FOR STUDENTS, PUPILS
In a move to stop the continuous rise in kidnap and rape cases across the state, the Lagos state government has introduced safety measures during the current long vacation to hinder any possible case that may ensue in public schools. This was disclosed in a memo to all permanent secretaries and tutors of the six educational districts in the state, asking them to stop all forms of vacation teaching for rest of the year. The government attributed the measure to ‘’present security situation and threats by kidnappers” in the state.
It was gathered that the state government took the measure in order to find solutions to the recent cases of kidnapping and rape in public schools. To this end, government representatives will be meeting with stakeholders during the vacation period to deliberate and find a lasting solution to the ugly trend, especially with those schools in the riverine areas, once and for all.
9. ABUJA COURT JAILS EX-GOVERNOR TURAKI 5 DAYS AFTER GRANTING HIM BAIL
The Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded a former governor of Jigawa State, Saminu Turaki in Kuje prison 5 days after granting him bail. At the court sitting yesterday, presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, Turaki will be remanded in prison until he’s able to meet the conditions attached to the bail granted to him earlier.
According to reports, the bail was granted on liberal terms on July 14 by the vacation judge of the High Court, Justice Yusuf Halilu. His bail stands at N500 million with two sureties at N250 million each. He is also to submit his travel documents to the court.
10. LAGOS ASSEMBLY MEMBER, KAZEEM ALIMI DIES AT 50
Member of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Hon. Kazeem Ademola Alimi is dead. The lawmaker who until his death, represented Eti Osa state constituency 1 in in the Assembly died on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, two weeks after his 50th birthday after a brief illness.
In a statement by Musbau Razak, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, confirmed that the late lawmaker died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). Hon. Alimi who was a two time lawmaker until his death, was a chairman of the house committee on local government.
