COURT FAULTS METUH’S MEDICAL REPORT

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday picked offence in a medical report submitted to his court by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesman, Olisa Metuh. The medical report contained information that Metuh, who was absent in court on Tuesday, required bed rest in the hospital.

The judge faults Metuh’s medical report on the ground that he did not state the duration of his supposed bed rest.

 

COURT ADJOURNS THEFT TRIAL OF EX-NIMASA DG

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday adjourns the theft trial of Patrick Akpobolokemi, the former director-general of Nigeria Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to May 27.

When the case was called, counsel to Akpobolokemi, Mr. Joseph Nwobike (SAN), informed the court of the ill health of his client. He then prayed the court for adjournment. The judge, Buba, consequently fixed May 27 for continuation of trial.

 

WHY SUBSIDY REMOVAL STRIKE FAILED – EX-TUC PRESIDENT

Former president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Peter Isele has stated that the recent strike action initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) failed because of a technical fault. He advised the Labour Unionists to always get their acts right before calling for strike action.

“There were some errors made by the Labour leadership. When you give notice, you don’t just give notice to the government, you also give it to yourself so that you prepare ground for whatever action you want to take”, he stated. He further advised the union on the need to unite, so as to make a headway.

 

OSHODI TRANSFORMATION WILL DEPICT NEW FACE OF LAGOS – AMBODE

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said the plan of his administration to transform Oshodi into a world class transport interchange in the next 13 to 16 months would go a long way to regenerate the state, as he said the project would totally remove all unlawful activities associated with the area.

Governor Ambode pleaded with stakeholders to support the project which is to take off on June 1 , 2016. Among other plans, according to the governor, is the provision of about 800 modern buses which would run 24/7 and would convey Lagosians to all part of the state, comfortably. The Lagos State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chairman, Mr. Tajudeen Agbede enjoined all his members to support the government to make the project a reality.

 

FAYOSE URGES OTHER GOVS TO BAN CATTLE GRAZING IN THEIR STATES

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has called on other governors across the country to ban cattle grazing in their states too, as a step to stop the killings of farmers by atrocious herdsmen. The Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, said this while speaking during a programme, monitored on Tuesday.

Virtually all those who called during the programme urged governors, especially those in the southern part of the country to emulate Fayose to liberate their people from the fear of herdsmen. One of the callers, Femi Adetunji commended Fayose for taken the step and others condemn the activities of the herdsmen and called on other governors to follow Fayose in this direction.

 

EFCC DECLARES OMISORE WANTED

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday, May 24, declared former deputy governor of Osun State, senator Iyiola Omisore, wanted. The senator is wanted in connection with a case of receiving and misappropriating the sum of over N700 million from the office of the National Security Adviser, between June and November, 2014.

Instead of responding to the commission’s investigation, Omisore had approached the Federal Capital Territory High Court for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf consequently ordered that Omisore should only be arrested through a due and legal process. The EFCC thereafter obtained a warrant to effect the arrest of the politician.

 

COURT SACKS MAKARFI, REINSTATES ALI MODU SHERIFF

A Federal High Court in Lagos has nullified the national caretaker committee constituted by the Peoples Democratic Party during last Saturday’s convention. The convention had appointed a former governor of Kaduna state, Ahmed Makarfi, as acting chairman, while former senator, Ben Obi, was appointed acting national secretary.

The party said the acting national officers would be in the office for three months. In a ruling on Tuesday however, Justice Ibrahim Buba ordered Ali Modu Sheriff, the erstwhile chairman of the party to continue serving as the party’s chairman.

 

FG RESUMES TALKS WITH WABBA LED NLC

The Federal Government will be meeting with the Ayuba Wabba led faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), today (Wednesday,May 25, 2016).The minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, said government would not continue with the negotiations if the strike was not called off.

The Labour Union which decided to embark on a nationwide action, following the increase of the pump price of fuel to N145, is prepared to meet with federal government to deliberate and negotiate on some issues affecting the country.

 

EKITI WORKERS BEGIN STRIKE OVER UNPAID SALARIES
The State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) have issued another 48-hour ultimatum to the government to pay the December deductions or face an industrial action.

The state TUC boss, Odunayo Adesoye, told reporters that Labour leaders are meeting at press time to discuss what would be the next line of action, consequent upon another 48 hours ultimatum issued to the governor to comply with the early demands.

 

INEC TO ADOPT ELECTRONIC VOTING IN 2019 – CHAIRMAN
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to drop manual conduct of voting in 2019 general elections. The Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this during a meeting with executives of the forum of State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECs), who visited him at the commission’s headquarters yesterday, in Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu noted that the commission was working towards replacing the manual process with modern technology in the conduct of local elections. He assured the SIECs of the commission’s collaboration during his tenure as part of efforts to deepen democracy.
