Top four MCs on parade – Their success stories and what makes a good anchor

AS masters of ceremony, they have anchored big events in Nigeria.  They are the most sought after because they have command of language and can conveniently put guests on the edge of their seats.  ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with five top MCs in the country.

JULIUS AGWU

What do you consider before taking up a job?

It depends on the event, what exactly I am adding to the event and what the event will add to me as a person and a brand.  It also depends on where the job is happening and the risk.

How do you keep the clients coming back?

My job is to deliver, it depends on the service I render.  Most people are peculiar with me.  When they see all these, they want to call me back.  I try to add an extra to any event that makes me extraordinary.

Does one need a lot of money to get your service?

It depends on the event and everything is not all about money, that is why I said it depends on the event.

Like how much do you charge for your MC job?

It varies, I can’t say the amount.

How do you hone your craft?

I read, I do my research well and I observe.

How does one succeed in this your line of job?

First, you need to confirm whether it is your calling, then when you confirm you need to be focused and disciplined because we have some MCs who take three jobs a day and that is not discipline.  Money is not everything.  You also need the grace of God, be prayerful and keep re-inventing yourself from time to time.  You also have to keep yourself updated with happenings around you.

What are the elements of a good MC?

You must be eloquent, you must have good communication skills and good phonetics and you also have to be witty and spontaneous so that if anything happens, you will know how to handle it.

What do you consider before taking up a job?

I consider what I will benefit from it like the payment or my relationship with the person.

How do you keep the clients coming back?

The way I deliver the job gets to impress them so they call me back.

Does one need a lot of money to get your service?

It depends on who I am working for, so it ranges.

Like how much do you charge for your MC job?

My rate is affordable.

How do you hone your craft?

I spend a lot of time concentrating on it. I read because it is important and I am always observant of my environment.

How does one succeed in this your line of job?

You need to read and you must be observant, you must watch the audience you are performing for and do not force yourself to impress your audience.

What are the elements of a good MC?

You must have charisma, you must be presentable.  You must have a good diction and you must carry your audience well and look presentable.

What do you consider before taking up a job?

I consider the event planners.  If an event is not well planned, everything becomes clumsy and usually the MC bears the brunt.

How do you keep the clients coming back?

By keeping my job as professional as possible.  My advantage is that I work with humour when and where necessary. I am flexible and I prepare for the event well.

Does one need a lot of money to get your service?

There are clients who I tell my charge and they pay me with a snap of the finger.  There are those who drag me to the negotiation table.  There are those who ask for charity services.  So, it depends on who wants my services.

Like how much do you charge for your MC job?

It depends on who, where and when.  The way I would charge a blue chip company is not the way I would charge a show promoter or a student body.

How do you hone your craft?

I read.  Books are weapons for power.

How does one succeed in this your line of job?

I think it varies.  For some, proper and corporate mien and delivery work for them.  For some being funny, a bit normal and flexible work for them.  For me, being informed and prepared is the key.

What are the elements of a good MC?

You must be presentable, you must be able to speak well.

What do you consider before taking up a job?

The client I am dealing with and my pay.

How do you keep the clients coming back?

I was the anchor of the preliminary show of Gulder Ultimate Search for the last five years.  I try to understand the specific need of each of my clients. I try to work in a way that I can please my clientele individually.

Does one need a lot of money to get your service?

Yes, a lot of money.  To some people it may not be a lot of money but I never do what I do for the money.

Like how much do you charge for your MC job?

Let’s say N1 million and above, I can’t give the exact amount.

How do you hone your craft?

I read and I rob minds with Yaw because he is very intelligent and I wear like four to six outfits in the shows I am invited to.

How does one succeed in this your line of job?

You cannot really rely on being an MC. I am a 24-hour broadcaster and also an investor.

What are the elements of a good MC?

You have to be able to connect with the audience.  You have to fill up their energy as they are going to do the same.
