‘It’s just a matrimonial issue’- Police
It’s no longer news that the marriage of top socialite, Otunba Babatunde Onakoya, famously known as Debasco to his estranged wife, Mrs. Olayinka Onasanya has hit the rocks. The news at the moment is that the crisis that engulfed the home of the popular politician and renowned entrepreneur has developed to an alarming and dangerous dimension.
An impeccable source disclosed to ENCOMIUM Weekly that Ogun State Police Command had arrested and detained Mrs. Onakoya alongside two others-Mrs. Bisi Lawal and Otunba Oduwole who are members of the popular Ijebu Ode Club.
According to the source, Mrs. Lawal and Oduwole were accused of conspiring with the embattled Mrs. Onasanya to harm the socialite at the premises of the club.
The arrest, we were told, was carried out on Monday, January 4, 2016, by the police from the Igbeba Area Command, Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. This was said to be on the heels of threat to life petition Debasco wrote to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase.
The petition, we gathered, was for the accused to explain their sides of the allegation and write an undertaking that the petitioner won’t be harmed.
However, the suspects, we learnt, have been moved to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun state for further investigations.
“The crisis between Otunba Tunde Debasco and his wife is getting worse by the day. And the way things are going, there are no indications that they ever can reconcile.
“Recently, I learnt the woman and two others-Mrs. Bisi Lawal and Otunba Oduwole were arrested and detained by the police over threat to life allegation by Debasco. The case has been transferred to the state command headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, where the accused are being detained.
“But I learnt there have been pressure on Debasco by some club members to withdraw the petition so that Mrs. Onakoya and two others arrested in connection with the case won’t be charged to court”
Otunba Debasco, while speaking with ENCOMIUM Weekly on Monday, January 11, 2016, confirmed the development. He added that other prominent members of the club are also aware of the case.
“My estranged wife, Mrs. Olayinka Onasanya, Mrs. Bisi Lawal and Otunba Oduwole are now at the CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, where they are being detained over threat to my life which I informed the police of.
“Even, at the station, Oduwole said I am a politician and that I can be shot at any time. That means they have contracted my life out to hired killers. Even, the Kabiyesis of the club and other important personalities, including the former president of the club are aware of it.
“I was alerted by the executive members of the club through their letter. That’s why I had to beef up security around me. The club even reported the matter at the Area Command, Ijebu Ode before I wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and copied the Area Commander”
Asked if there is any move towards resolving the issue amicably, he stated, “I can’t say for now. The truth is that they’re being detained on allegation of threat to life which is very serious. Although, their lawyers have written to me, pleading on their behalf to avoid being charged to court. It now depends on what my lawyers say on the issue after going through the letter.”
However, when ENCOMIUM Weekly got across to the Ogun state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, he said, “It’s true these people were arrested at Ijebu Ode and they were transferred to Eleweran where they were detained and interrogated. But they have been released since yesterday.
“The case is not as being presented. It’s just a matrimonial issue. And Mrs. Onakoya is still married to Otunba Onakoya. I don’t see any issue of threat to life in the matter. It’s just a matter of him wanting to take custody of his less than a year old baby. But as it is now, we are still investigating the matter. And whatever the outcome is, we will let you know”
A couple of months back, Mrs. Onakoya moved out of her matrimonial home after irreconcilable differences. And allegedly, in a letter written to the IGP by Debasco, Mrs. Onakoya stormed the popular Ijebu Ode Club with a substance suspected to be an acid in alleged desperate move to show her grievances and displeasure on the situation of her crumbled marriage to the socialite, but was prevented by security operatives attached to the club.
