Two Lagos commissioners almost dropped – Oba Akiolu, Kemi Nelson rescue Dr. Idris and Onanuga

DRS. Jide Idris and Femi Onanuga, who were sworn in on Monday, October 19, 2015, as members of Lagos State Executive Council have Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Olowo Eko of Eko and Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson, to thank for scaling through the Ad Hoc Screening Committee of the Lagos House of Assembly.

The two were almost dropped by the Ad Hoc Screening Committee for one reason of the other.  In fact, they appeared before the committee twice before they were finally confirmed.

Virtually all the ranking members of the Ad-Hoc Screening Committee tongue-lashed Dr. Jide Idris, for what they called his aloofness and haughtiness during his time as permanent secretary and commissioner in the Ministry of Health for 12 years.  They told him to his face the throughout that period, he neither took their (honourable members) calls nor acknowledged their notes. To further prove their point, they told him to name 10 honourable members he knows. He could only name two.  Even in naming the two honourable members he made mistake by referring to Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, as a former Chairman of Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA.  He was told to go away that they were not going to screen him.

According to our source, the America trained medical doctor was moved to tears after the tongue-lashing. He was said to have told somebody that he had never been so embarrassed in his life.

The following day, Dr. Jide Idris, was back at Lateef Jakande Auditorium, where the screening took place.  But he was not alone this time around. He came with Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson, the National Women Leader (South West) of APC, who came to appeal to the screening committee members on his behalf.  Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson was said to have told the members of screening that Dr. Idris, is her first cousin.  But despite their blood relationship, he never acknowledge her note or took her calls too.  She was literarily on her kneels appealing to the members to forgive him that he will change from his old ways.

ENCOMIUM Weekly also gathered Oba Rilwan Akiolu also put a call to the Screening Committee Chairman, Rt. Hon. Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni concerning Drs. where Jide Idris and Femi Onanuga.

Dr. Onanuga, a former Medical Director at Randle Hospital, Surulere, Lagos issue with the screening committee bothered on a petition by some people over his (Onanuga) expulsion by Ikoyi Club 1938, over an allegation of fraud.

The Screening Committee because of this did not want to screen or confirm him as a commissioner.  It took a phone call from Oba Rilwan Akiolu to the committee and the legal advice of a private lawyer sought by the committee before he was screened and confirmed as a member of the state executive council.

Dr. Jide Idris, was not the only nominee tongue-lashed by the screening committee for what they called their arrogance and aloofness since being in government.  Prince Gbolahan Lawal, Mr. Folarin Coker, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan and Dr. Akintola Benson, were also told to their faces by the screening committee to improve on their poor human relations.  They were told that if Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who they are all close to, did not have good human relations, he would not attain what he attained today in terms of leadership and followership.
