Unwrapping the 10 most popular songs of 2015

2015 has witnessed some mega hit songs as artistes and producers kicked into top gear to serve their fans the very best. Be it collaborations featuring the big players, or solo efforts, hits after hits have been churned out this year…

KOREDE BELLO -God win

Call Korede Bello’s God win the anthem of 2015, and you won’t too far from the truth – it was that popular!

From January when it was released, many fell in love with the tune, to the point that many even adopted Godwin as their name.

Produced by ace music maker and the Mavin himself, Don Jazzy, doro mega superstar as the young chap is also known, enjoyed a great ride this year. He cemented the popularity of the song with an interesting video that saw some funny dance moves.

OLAMIDE -Bobo

“Enyi omo wobe…” even a five-year-old would know what to respond at this point. YBNL Badoo, Olamide continued his remarkable feat of producing hit songs after hit songs in 2015; not only that, he released his fifth album in five years – unprecedented!

Released around May, Bobo, produced by Young John the wicked producer, caught on like harmattan wildfire, spreading like a virus and infecting dance floors across Nigeria.

WIZKID – Ojuelegba remix ft Drake,  Skepta

2015 was a pretty quiet year for Starboy Wizkid by his usually high standards, yet he had arguably the biggest song out of Africa.

The beautifully-crafted, easily-relatable Ojuelegba, off his sophomore album, Ayo, is a classic tune, and will be talked about for a long time! The remix, featuring American stars Drake and Skepta, only served to help it break into the international market, and that it did.

HARRYSONG – Raggae Blues ft Olamide,  Iyanya,  Kcee,  Orezi

What do you expect when a guy with undoubted songwriting skill collaborates with a bunch of immensely talented guys and they pull their might together to produce one tune? A definite hit!

Reggae blues, produced by Dr Amir, is a easy-to-sing-along highlife tune that still rules the dance halls and airwaves till date.

Each artiste, Harrysong, Kcee, Olamide, Iyanya and Orezi brought his A-game onto the track, delivering short, yet witty melodious lines. It was the coming together of five wonderful cooks, only this time they didn’t spoil the broth, they prepared a delicious one.

KISS DANIEL – Woju remix ft Tiwa Savage,  Davido

Building on the huge popularity of the original offering, Kiss Daniel sought the expertise of superstar acts, Tiwa Savage and Davido to produce Woju remix; and they fanned the dying embers of the song.

For months, baby Oya woju o was the favourite line on the lips of many.

PATORANKING – My Woman,  My Everything ft Wande Coal

It is not very often you find an African man unreservedly expressing his love for his woman, my woman, my everything by dancehall act, Patoranking did just that. To him, his woman was all that matters, and as long as he had his woman, he has everything, what high praise!

Though the Girlie O crooner did not release his album as many expected, my woman my everything was a huge hit, and featuring Wande Coal was a masterstroke.

DAVIDO – Fans Mi ft Meek Mill

The trend among the music industry big boys is to collaborate with foreign-based acts; on Fans mi, Davido bagged his, featuring American rapper, Meek Mill.

Fans mi, scheduled as part of the HKN gang leader’s yet-to-be-released sophomore album, is a nice hip hop tune and sees the multi-award winning act self-praising.

Though the video was banned and Davido investigated by the NDLEA, the star power of the song was enough to see it past those hurdles.

MASTERKRAFT – Indomie remix ft Olamide,  CDQ,  Davido

Masterkraft, the beat maker per excellence with many hits produced for other artistes to his credit, crafted a mega hit for himself this time.

Adding Davido to Olamide and CDQ on the already-popular song made it even bigger.

Though lacking any real depth, Indomie, typifying the Nigerian music scene, was warmly received by many.

ORITSE FEMI –Igbeyawo

Oritsefemi’s Igbeyawo is a lovely wedding tune that advises couples on what it takes to have a good marriage. On this tune, Oritsefemi admonishes the husband to love his wife and to be patient with her; while he encourages the wife to do same – the recipe for a successful marriage!

Released in December 2014, the song was produced by Fliptyce and is off the musical Taliban sophomore album.

ADEKUNLE GOLD -Orente

YBNL’s Adekunle Gold is the year’s breakout star!

Until he released Sade, a cover to One Direction’s Story of my life, he was relatively popular for his graphics design prowess with many interesting and funny memes created with Photoshop. But he came to prominence following the release of the song.

Proving he’s not a one-hit wonder, he released Orente, which he incidentally wrote before the earlier-released Sade, to much acclaim. Orente, a fine love-themed urban highlife tune that celebrates the African woman in her most natural form, went on to surpass the success of Sade, cementing his place as a ladies favourite.
