We’re not engaged, just committed – Yeni Kuti clarifies

Six days after the false news of a marriage proposal by Theo Lawson, the  long time partner of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s first child, Omoyeni dominated the information superhighway, she has denied the tale, encomium.ng can tell you authoritatively.

When Encomium.ng called the mother of Fela’s first grandchild (Rolari Femi Segun who got married to Benedict Jacka in June and August 2015) in the afternoon of Monday, May 30, she clarified that the ring was for more commitment, not a marriage proposal.

The internet was agog last week following the celebrations of Yeni’s 55th birthday on Tuesday, May 24. At one of the parties, Theo Lawson, who runs Total Consult and Freedom Park, presented a ring to his love interest of many years, and it was easy to interpret that they were engaged.

Many years back, Yeni, a choreographer, designer, manager and TV anchor, had ruled out the possibility of remarrying. She was once married to Femi Segun, the adored former diplomat, polyglot, banker and master of ceremonies extraordinaire who died in an accident in March 2014 long after their union collapsed.

And the news of this new proposal excited all.

But in the afternoon of Monday, May 30,  at 4:42, she punctured our expectations. She told Encomium. Ng : ” He did give me a ring on my birthday, it was his mother’s wedding ring. It does not mean we are engaged. It was a sign of commitment to one another.”
