WHAT A NIGHT WITH THE MASTERS

The much-talked about gathering of six icons of the Nigerian music industry, Night with the Masters concert, held on Friday, September 13, 2013, lived up to expectations as guests were treated to a night they will never forget.

Onyeka Onwenu, Femi Kuti, K1 De Ultimate, Bright Chimezie, Sir Shina Peters and Commander Ebenezer Obey all dazzled on stage as guests danced till 4:20am on Saturday.

It was a gathering of the classy and fun lovers, of kings and royalty as the Over the top entertainment packaged event started very late as most shows in Lagos…

THE SHOW STARTED AT EXACTLY 9:45

Polular OAP, Freeze of Cool FM, who anchored the show alongside the king of Nigerian comedy, Ali Baba, introduced the first act on stage as Onyeka set the ball rolling with her popular track, Iyogogo. Her performance lasted for 45 minutes and the highlight was probably when she stepped off the stage to join Lagos socialite, Chief Segun Oniru to dig her jolly track, ‘Dancing in the sun’. She exited the stage at 10:40pm.

MILIKI TIME

The Miliki exponent, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey whom many tale bearers have alleged to be ill, came on stage by 10:44 to discredit such tales. The Juju maestro upped the tempo, the hall got groovier as he sang one hit after the other. From Eni ri nkan he, to Eniyan ti mo feran ju and others. Obey practised some democracy when he asked the crowd to choose which song they’d love to hear – Board members, Ketekete and Aimasiko. The crowd voted for Ketekete to which the commander obliged. He left on a high note after eventually performing Aimasiko.

BRIGHT CHIMEZIE WAS DELIGHTED

Even if Bright Chimezie did not confess over the mic that, “It has never happened like this before, we are delighted to be here”, it was written all over the popular Abia state born entertainer’s face. He came on after Obey. With his distinct South eastern flavour, and if there’s anything fans expected from him, it was his electrified dance moves and he didn’t disappoint. He gave the crowd in multiple doses. He left the stage at exactly 12:25.

SHINA THE SHOW MAN SLIPPED AND FELL

Following a short comedy interlude from Ali Baba and Freeze, Sir Shina Peters came on stage at exactly 12:42 amidst great showmanship. He started his performance with his rendition of Sir. Victor Owaifo’s Joromi as he showed off his dexterity on the guitar. There was a minor mishap, however, as he tripped on a nail on the stage and hurt his face with a gash above his eye, bleeding. He refused to live the stage. He went ahead with his performance as his boys kept wiping the blood off his face. “If Jesus could shed his blood for the world because of love, I will do the same for my fans who love me” argued Shina. He gave a good account of himself before he was whisked off at 11:15.

THEN CAME FEMI KUTI

Afrobeat king, Femi Kuti gave a two hour scintillating performance. His eye popping dancers kept rolling and whining as he sang jams like Dem Bobo, Wonder, etc. He brought more dancers on stage to perform his award winning track, Bang Bang Bang which the audience could not resist dancing to.

If anyone mistook Femi for a 20 year old for his energy on stage, he’d be forgiven. Femi gave a performance to which his father would have been proud. He closed with the Legend’s popular hit track, Water.

ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE FROM K1

The king of Fuji, K1 the ultimate came on stage by 3:38 am to close the show. There were whispers that the reason all the royalty in the hall were going to wait till the end of the show was none other than K1 and he truly came on to give a performance fit for kings. The talazo music exponent kept the hall agog with fans on their feet throughout his performance. They kept asking for more till he called it a day at 4:20am.

‘The future of Fuji music’ -K1 DE ULTIMATE

How do you feel tonight, performing alongside other masters of the game?

It feels really good.

What did it take to make you come out for this kind of show because the impression is that it is difficult to get you for shows?

Let me correct that impression. It is not difficult, it’s simply a matter of negotiation. Sometimes, negotiation doesn’t mean higher money. It could be the manner of approach or the type of programme. There is no artiste in this country that would be asked to come and perform on stage with the calibre of artistes that performed here tonight that would refuse. Imagine Shina Peters, Bright Chimezie, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, the elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu and Commander Ebenezer Obey with their pedigree, no doubt about that  these are the A list artistes in Nigeria.

Everybody in this hall, especially the youths were all enthusiastically dancing to your music today. How does it make you feel?

It makes me feel glad and I appreciate everybody that appreciates what I’m doing and thank them too.

How do you see the future of fuji music in Nigeria?

The future of Fuji music is good and there is no doubt in my mind that the future is bright for Fuji music in this country. Other people playing the music are really doing it very well.

What are your comments to the organisers of this event?

Having chosen this venue, it is an indication of their seriousness. Promotion business requires big money. It is a venture you run with lots of funds. And overtime, it will spread and when it spreads, the returns will be massive. I give kudos to them, they really tried and I have no doubt in my mind that if they continue like this, they’re going to make mega bucks. They’ve made a statement tonight, having paraded all these stars.

Are you looking forward to more of this?

Definitely, I am. We were assured of continuance of this event.

‘Today is a great night’ – OBEY

Today is a great night, night of the masters with Onyeka, Bright Chimezie, Femi Kuti, K1, Shina Peters. It is a good thing to come together to thrill.

What do you like most about the show tonight, sir?

It is a good thing to see a lot of youths dancing to our music. We thank God for that.

‘There should be shows like this all the time’ – ONYEKA ONWENU

It’s always a good thing, always a privilege to share the talent that God has given you with other people. It’s a beautiful thing. I always enjoy it.

You rolled back the years today, with your energetic performance. How do you keep doing it?

I am always energetic and I thank God for good health. I thank Him any day I wake up.

Do you wish we had more shows of this nature?

I am always working. Cast your wind back, I’m always working and there should be shows like this all the time to bring us all together, the old, the new and the not so new.

What words have you got for the organisers?

I think they’ve done a terrific job and I wish them greater success in the future. I think they need to be congratulated for stepping out to do this, kudos to them.

How would you compare the type of music you and your breed made to what we have on parade today?

We had good music and there are still people today playing good music. I think you should give every artiste a chance to grow and mature. They may start up doing not so well in terms of lyrics but they will mature and come into their own. So, let’s not condemn them but encourage them.
