Where’s Nnamdi Kanu?

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is nowhere to be found despite his vow that no amount of intimidation would make him abandon the struggle for Biafra’s independence. Is he dead or alive, in hiding or in military custody? This and much more has been the question on the lips of every Nigerian, particularly those in the southeastern part of the country. His sudden disappearance has remained unknown ever since troops of the Nigerian Army allegedly invaded his house in Afara-ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia state on September 14. The clash between the Army and the IPOB members which generated a lot of tension in the southeast, left so many people dead while others flee for their dear lives, including the separatists’ leader, Nnamdi Kanu, his father the traditional ruler of Afara ukwu community, Eze Isreal Kanu coupled with his wife. Their whereabouts are yet to be known. However, rumours have been flying about as to what may have happened to the embattled leader and members of his immediate family ever since the incident.

encomium.ng brings you speculations about the whereabouts of IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu but none was confirmed:

Some of the rumours had it that Kanu sustained serious gunshot wounds during the attack in his country home and because he’s not been able to visit any hospital for proper treatment, the injuries have remained a major discomfort. According to rumours, the wound is getting worse that sometimes he feels dizzy and unconscious.

Another IPOB loyalist, Uzoma Nduka, claimed that Kanu successfully escaped from his home on the fateful night but was apprehended around Okigwe in Imo State, where he was allegedly killed and his body taken away. Yet, another rumour claimed he was arrested in Okigwe by soldiers and taken away in an unmarked vehicle.

Some group and traditional rulers of Ibeku clan in Abia State alleged that the Nigerian Army killed Mazi Nnamdi Kanu during the attack and invasion of his compound in Umuahia, Abia State. The group explained that Kanu might have been eliminated during the attack. They however said that the Nigerian Army owed them an explanation, because many people were killed in the attack including the female cook of the Kanus. But the Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche, explained that the military was not in anyway holding Kanu.

Another version of the story alleged that Kanu went to Malaysia from where he travelled to the United Kingdom and that he was not arrested by anybody. He left the country on his own.

Meanwhile, the development has also attracted the attention of the United Kingdom (UK) as Kanu is also a British national. As such, the UK has also been mounting pressure on the Federal Government to provide information on the whereabouts of the IPOB leader because Kanu’s whereabout is unknown to them.

Similarly, a civil society group, the Advocate of Social Justice for All (ASJA), recently expressed the belief that Kanu has found his way back to the United Kingdom. A group also accused the UK of harbouring Kanu, whom they described as a terrorist, noting that the proper thing to do was to extradite him. The group claimed that Kanu escaped from Nigeria to Cameroon from where he travelled to Malaysia and then to the UK.

A brother to the IPOB leader, one Emmanuel Kanu, on behalf of the family said the whereabout of Kanu and his parent’s are not known. He said if Kanu is alive, the Army should hand him over to the police or if he is dead, they should release the corpse to his family because it is certain Kanu is in their custody. Meanwhile, counsel to the separatist leader, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has said Nnamdi Kanu will never jump bail if he is still alive. He maintained that it is the responsibility of the federal government to produce Kanu’s corpse.

Kanu is currently facing trials bordering on criminal conspiracy and treasonable felony before Justice Binta Nyako-led court.

Ahead of resumed hearing today, the IPOB leader has not been seen or heard from since September 14, after the incident in his residence.

However, a member of the prosecution team said the Federal Government was determined to proceed with the matter even if Kanu failed to appear in court.

But the last have not been heard why all of a sudden, Senator Abaribe is applying to withdraw as Kanu’s surety since he did not know Kanu’s whereabouts.

However the case, Kanu’s whereabouts is yet to be known as all the controversies surrounding his sudden disappearance are all rumours as none was confirmed.
