WHO WINS BIG THIS WEEKEND AT THE MTV’S MAMA AWARDS?

On Saturday, June 7, 2014, top African music stars will converge at ICC, Durban, South-Africa for the grand finale of this year’s MTV’s Africa Music Awards (MAMA Awards). International superstars such as Trey Songz, French Montana, Miguel, among others are also billed to perform at the continental award.
Less than a week to the awards, a host of MAMA nominees, particularly the contenders for the song of the year have spoken about their hopes for the awards.
In a chat with ENCOMIUM Weekly at a press conference held before the road to MAMA party at The Marquee, Federal Palace Hotel on Friday, May 30, 2014, Dr. SID excited for the nomination in the Song of the Year Category, hoped that with the popularity of his wondrous hit single, Surulere, he would win.
“This is my second MAMA. The first nomination was with, the defunct Mohits. But now, I am nominated as an individual artiste. I am excited and happy. It shows that patience is a virtue,” said Dr. Sid.
Davido got four MAMA nominations including the song of the year for Skelewu. He said, “Being nominated alone is a great joy for me. This is my first time, and I am nominated in four categories. I am happy. Song of the Year category is going to be tough, I wish myself all the best.
The South-African duo, Mafikizolo are currently in their best form, after winning big at Channel O Music Video in South Africa, including “Best African Act Video” at the 5th edition of the 4Syte TV Music Awards, held at the Accra International Conference Centre. Their Khona was also nominated for the prestigious Song of the Year category. They expressed satisfaction while speaking with ENCOMIUM Weekly, urging Nigerians and Africans to vote for them.
The trio (Dr. Sid, Davido and Mafikizolo) joined other MAMA nominees and performers including Tiwa Savage, Chidinma, Olamide, KCee, among many others to thrill as they danced and partied into the night. Others who ignited were Phyno, and Mavin crew wonder-kids, Afrodija and Korede Bello. There was also a surprise performance from Dbanj alongside Burna Boy.
Hosted by MTV’s VJ, Ehiz, the event was attended by Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, Phillip Sithole, CEO, Durban Tourism and Akintayo Akinseloyin, Brand Manager.
Featuring contemporary artistes and music that are making waves across the continent, Road to MAMA Nigeria has been criss-crossing the continent in the build up to the MAMA awards. Previous editions have visited Durban, South Africa and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Making sure that the evening’s proceedings went with a bang were star MTV Base “Mixology” DJs, DJ Humility and DJ Caise, and top turntablists, DJ Spinall and DJ Obi.
