Why Ambode appointed a serving Director in Civil Service as Commissioner

Even though there is no love lost between Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state and some of the senior civil servants in the state, his recent appointment of Mr Sunday Olusegun Banjo, the erstwhile Director of Technical Department Lagos State Audit Service Commission, as commissioner of Economic Planning and Budget has been praised by many.

Scores believe the appointment of Mr Segun Banjo was not only based on merit but also on his diligence and integrity .

encomium.ng gathered from a reliable source that since Mr. Ambode became governor, he had twice given a special audit assignment to Mr Banjo and he delivered perfectly.

One of the assignments was the alleged fraud going on in the Local government pension office. At the end of the assignment it was discovered the that the state government was being fleeced of huge amount of money on monthly basis by some public servants.

The high point of the assignment, we gathered, was that those involved in the fleecing later came to see Mr Banjo with a huge amount of money which he tactically rejected.

Some believed this may account for the confidence the governor has in him to have appointed him a commissioner from the post of a director.

Although some people argued that his place of birth, Epe, where the governor is from, may have contributed to his appointment. But some disagreed with this. They argued that Segun Banjo’s diligence and integrity on his job is more of it than his place of birth.
They went further to argue that the former Chairman of Lagos Internal Revenue Service, Mr Folarin Ogunsanwo, and the former commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development who are both from Epe but were found wanting on their jobs were shown the way out by the same governor.

Mr Sunday Olusegun Banjo, born on June 28, 1964, is a graduate of Accounting from University of Ife, Ile – Ife (Osun state).
He is also a fellow of ICAN. He joined Lagos Public Service in 2001 as Deputy Bursar, LASU .
He later joined LIRS as Deputy Director in 2005 from where he moved to Office of the State Auditor General as Director of Audit in 2007.

In 2016, he was redeployed to Audit Service Commission from he appointed Commissioner of Economic Planning and Budget.
