Why Folorunsho Alakija is a socialite

For a billionaire worth $1.8 billion one would have imagined Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, 65, to be a tycoon with little time for social activities. But the mother of four sons who married Mr. Modupe Alakija in 1976 had been in the frontline of high society since the 80s when she established her tailoring outfit in Surulere (Lagos), mixing with movers and shakers and partying effortlessly.

With Supreme Stitches which later transformed into Rose of Sharon, the one-time President of Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria easily eased into Lagos’ social circle, rubbing shoulders with those who dictated the pace.

So, seeing her at high octane events is second nature. And with her flamboyant and colourful dress sense, it is impossible to forget the pedigree of the Ikorodu (Lagos) born woman of means.

Organizing talk of the town events, with lavish banquet and spectacular decorations at well appointed locations is a piece of cake for her, from her son’s wedding to her 60th birthday five years ago.

And the 65th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary of Africa’s most powerful woman at Oriental Hotel (Victoria Island, Lagos) earlier preceded by a church service would be talked about for a long time.

With blue and gold colour code, the woman who got her break with FAMFA Oil after applying for oil prospecting license in May 1993 with the help of the General lbrahim  Babangida , former dictator rewrote the ways high society gigs should be staged.
