‘Why I can never leave comedy,’ says Gbenga Adeyinka

THE social media was agog over the weekend wishing ace comedian and compere, Gbenga Adeyinka happy birthday.  ENCOMIUM Weekly had a chat with him about his new age and sundry issues.

How does it feel adding a year?

I feel great, I feel blessed.  I have gotten a lot of messages on social media, some even called to congratulate me.  I feel God cares about me.  I am really grateful.

How old are you now, sir?

I am close to 50.

What are you most grateful to God for at this age?

I am grateful to God for life, family, friends, good health.  I have a lot of reasons to thank God for at this age.

Any regret?

I have no regret at all.  I am too blessed to have any regret.  God has done me well. I know He will do every other thing I want Him to do for me.

What will you consider your achievement at this stage?

I have been able to discover what God sent me to do on earth.  A lot of people don’t know why they are here. I thank God I was able to discover mine and I have been able to put smiles on the faces of a lot of people through what I do.

What will you consider your greatest challenge?

I will say having enough time in the day to do what I want to do within 24 hours. Then, the fact that I don’t have enough money to set up what I want.  I have seen a lot of people living from hand to mouth.  I can at least set up a television station or radio station that will employ these people.  Most of them are able hands, it is just unfortunate that they haven’t gotten a good job.  It is also unfortunate that I don’t have enough money to set up such company.

How far will you say you have gone with the achievement of your set goals in 2015?

I have not done anything yet.  I still have a very long way to go.

What is happening to your yearly show?

We have to shift it because of the elections.  We are considering October.  I am in a production venue discussing how to go about the planning. We are still going to Ibadan this year again.  Hopefully, before the end of 2015, we will bring it to Lagos State.

What else do you do apart from comedy?

I do comedy and everything that has to do with comedy.  I have a couple of television programmes. I anchor events.  I do a little of real estate, I hustle like every other Nigerian.

Do you think you will quit comedy as you advance in age?

Comedy is not something you can leave.  People always believe that when you are on stage, telling a joke, that is when you are a comedian but you can also be back stage influencing comedy. I can never leave comedy.  No matter where I go, I would never ever leave comedy.
