After losing a penalty in the Copa America finals on Sunday (June 26) against Chile, 29 year old Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football.
“It is not meant for me. For me, the international team is over. I’ve done all l can, it hurts not to be a champion”, the star footballer said after Argentina lost 2 – 4 to Chile in the penalty shootout.
In nine years, Argentina has lost four major finals, but with Barcelona Messi has won eight La Liga titles and four Champion Leagues.
Messi said further, “It’s been four finals, l tried. It was the thing l wanted the most, but l couldn’t get it. So, l think it’s over.
“I think this is the best for everyone. First of all, for me, and then for everyone. I think there’s a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching a final and not winning it.
“It is very hard but the decision is taken. Now l will not try more, and there’s no going back.”
Messi scored five goals at this Copa America, and he’s Argentina’s highest goal scorer with 55 goals after he made his debut for his country in 2005.
The five time world footballer of the year has scored 453 goals in 531 games for Barcelona, with 312 goals in Spanish league.
