Comic actress, Eniola Badmus is one of the few thespians lucky to have clinched endorsements with multinational companies, Activ TV, and now telecommunication giant, Etisalat. Her distinct acting prowess gave her this platform.
In this interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly, she spoke about her endorsement and what she has been up to…
You travelled a couple of weeks back outside the country, was it career related?
I went to the United States because of Olamide. I hosted OLIC show in the States. Olamide also had a tour for three weeks.
From there, I went to London to do one or two things. The tour gave me an opportunity to see some of my fans outside the country. It was a wonderful show.
Congratulations on your Etisalat ambassadorship? How does it feel?
Thank you. It feels good. I like it so well. I never thought of it. I woke up sometime in January when I was called that the management wanted to have a meeting with me. I went and we sealed the deal.
What do you think gave you an edge?
I don’t know what they saw in me, but I think my job has been speaking for me. It could be because of what they saw about me and decided to identify with my brand. I know God is also the major factor behind it. It came out well because of Him.
How juicy was it?
Of course, it is very juicy. Glory be to God. But, we are not there yet. I am still praying to God so that all my dreams can come true.
How long is the endorsement?
Every endorsement lasts for one year and after one year, if they still like the brand, they will keep on renewing.
Will you say you are one of the lucky actresses to clinch endorsements here and there?
It makes me feel that people are watching me. It makes me feel that I am not working in vain, that, I can be bigger. It makes me feel I am doing very well. I thank God for that. I owe it all to God.
What is happening to you career wise?
I have been working since I got back. I have not rested. I have been trying to do one or two things. I want to start shooting my movies. We are preparing for that. I have some scripts with me, about three. I will be through by second week of June. I am shooting two movies of my own. My movies are serious drama. I want to do something different from what people know me for. It is going to be in cinema.
What is your opinion about the state of the industry right now?
The industry has gone far. It is not what it was 10 years ago. The technical, pictures, lighting have improved. The leverage is huge now. You can watch our movies anywhere in Nigeria at the cinema. We are getting there gradually.
Will you say movies are still selling?
We are aware that piracy is the major problem. I believe if we take bold steps, we will be able to sell more.
Do you think it is possible for a producer to recoup the money invested in a movie?
Yes, it is possible. If they don’t get their money back, they would have stopped. It might not be huge but certainly, they are getting returns from their investment.
The Yoruba genre of actresses seems to have a liking for MC Oluomo. What is your take about it?
I have this principle, live and let others live. If you know me well, you will know that what others do is really not my business. I don’t know how to answer this question. I don’t have siblings in the industry. I just want to focus on the business part of my work. I don’t poke my nose in other people’s businesses. I am a friend to everybody. I only look out for the business part of the job, not their personal lives.
Do you think it is possible for an actor to make a living out of acting?
Sure! I don’t have money, I am not rich. I am just comfortable in my own zone. I believe one can make a living out of whatever you are doing. There is this thing about rebranding. Brand yourself, improve your brand, be creative. I don’t do other business. I live out of this job. The endorsement came out of what I do.
Have you considered doing business alongside what you do?
I have loads of things I want to do. I like to take my time, get all the necessary things together before I go ahead. If you go ahead before planning, the business will crash. Some people have been disturbing me that they want me to sew plus line clothing for them, I am thinking in that line. I want to be adequately prepared before going into it. When it is time, we will launch it.
What tips can you give the up and coming acts that will make them succeed in the movie industry?
They should ask themselves if they are ready. When I started out, I wasn’t fully prepared. What I got after my career kicked off was far from my dreams. They should be prepared and be ready to bear the consequences of their decisions. Like people abusing them on social media, going to locations and not getting paid.
They need to be determined and focused. If not, frustration will set in and they will quit. The job can be frustrating when starting up. You have to go to locations, you may not be paid. You may go on set and they may not do your beat for days. I went to set and I wasn’t paid. I can’t even count the number of times I went through that. That is the industry.
When you are a new comer, it can be frustrating but I was strong. I never thought of quitting, though my parents didn’t like my decision to become an actress. They almost had a fight with me become I didn’t come home. They would look for me. It was later they left me after fighting me severally.
How is your love life?
Those are the things I don’t like talking about. Let us just talk about my career. I don’t believe in talking about personal issues to the press and social media. They won’t make such relationship last.
What is your take about celebrities and social media?
Nigerians in the disapora do not really have loyal fans. My fans are other celebrities’ fans. We don’t have fans that wouldn’t move out from you. So, I don’t reply them. I am a comic person. I don’t reply them. Nothing gets to me. There are some comments that get to me but I don’t reply.
I am not about that. They are the same set of people that will praise me tomorrow. It is better to ignore such comments.
