Why prostitutes are multiplying

The rate at which prostitution is growing in our society is very alarming. And Nigeria’s poor economic situation has always been one major excuse of those engaging in the illicit trade which is as old as Adam.

The profession is recording more participants as women of different ages and marital status are now found almost every nook and cranny of Nigeria’s major cities, especially Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

One of the sex workers who operate in Ikeja area of Lagos, Becky, told encomium.ng that quitting the business can’t be easy now unless Nigeria’s economy improves. She added that no one was born a prostitute but lack of legitimate work due to the ailing economy is constantly drawing so many women into the field.

“Let me be honest, if I get a better job tomorrow, I will quit prostitution. I don’t think there’s a born prostitute anywhere. Everything is just because Nigeria’s economy has not been okay since a long while ago and is getting worse by the day. And the government is not paying meaningful attention to youth employment.  And if at all, you eventually struggle to get yourself a job, the job can sustain you unless you cut corners because of the poor economy. So, people should just stop blaming us.  Do you think it’s even easy to be a prostitute?

Another commercial sex worker, Loveth who is based in Fagba area of Lagos also corroborated the earlier speaker, arguing that unless the government creates more job opportunities for Nigerian youth, the trade will continue to attract an influx of women even married or single.

“I don’t see any crime in being a prostitute. I can’t steal and I must survive. Don’t be surprised we’re three sisters operating from Lagos here. We travel to as far as Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ekiti or anywhere they call us. I have OND in Business Administration since 2013, no job. That’s why I moved to Lagos. Even on getting here, I tried getting a job but the pay was very poor. How can one survive in Lagos with just N30,000? That’s not possible unless you add other things to it. If the economy is okay and there’s job everywhere, people won’t be coming into prostitution again.

Another prostitute from Ogba also gave a similar excuse but pledged to relocate back to her village by December this year.

“Many new faces keep joining prostitution almost every day. Hardly could you come out at night and not meet a new face in every fun spot we go. Even, despite the fact that everywhere is dry, many women are still interested in the job. I call it a job because there’s no better job anywhere now. If you like be a graduate, you can’t find a job that can sustain you. And if you must work, the ‘oga’ will want to turn you to a sex machine before he gives work and can even be threatening g you with sack letter any day you refuse to have sex with him. So, why not commercialise your sex instead of unnecessary harassment. Though patronage has improved now, I won’t stay here beyond December this year. I want to go back to my village open a shop. I need to even get married soon by God’s grace.”
