Why you shouldn’t have life threatening ailments in Nigeria

When last did you visit the hospital? Can you remember? If you have recently visited a hospital especially, government hospitals, you would have marvelled at the way some patients are left with reckless abandon by the medical personnel in these hospitals, even when they need utmost attention.

This scenario brings to mind the question of why Nigerians with health issues are abandoned by the government.

Inability of government to Implement Proper Health Policies: Most politicians think the fulfilment of their campaign promises to provide adequate health care starts and ends with buildings and stocking them with some facilities. They see no need to implement policies that ensure that the infrastructures are used properly for the treatment of those who need them.

Lost Confidence in the health sector: The decision of public officer holders (or leaders, if you wish) to embark on unplanned foreign trips to attend personal health related challenges or that of relatives, measures quite accurately the level of confidence bestowed on the system by the question.

Poverty and Poor Standard of Living: A revised health policy of Nigeria states that preventable diseases account for 70 per cent of the country’s disease burden and identifies poverty as a major cause of the development.

Inadequate Training of Doctors: Most government hospitals are satisfied with just having doctors, with fewer concerns on their qualification or the updated state of the medical personnel who are saddled with the imperative task of taking care of patients. This has efficiently led to many patients being abandoned by doctors whose knowledge in treating patient is not up-to-date.

Poor Circulation of Medical Kits: Some of the medical equipment, medicines and services needed for proper functioning and medical operations in government hospitals are available (in some cases) but the refusal of concerned agencies to properly circulate them around to other areas has led to neglect in some areas.
