Women lament sudden increase in gas price

A couple of months back, Nigerians embraced cooking gas as alternative to kerosene when the commodity became so expensive. Now, cooking gas price has suddenly skyrocketed from N3,000 to N4,700. Some even buy for more. Nigerians are already groaning because it is becoming unbearable to buy. We sampled opinions of women using gas about this development.

‘I DON’T KNOW WHY THE PRICE IS GOING UP’ – Caroline Peterson

The increase is too high for me really. The last time I refilled, it was N4,500. I don’t know why the price is going up. One thing about this country is that you wouldn’t get an explanation for this. I read it in the papers that government didn’t increase it from their end, then what exactly is happening?

‘THIS IS CRAZY’ – Zainab Omobola

It is crazy. You can imagine how bad it is now, almost N5,000 to refill 12.5kg. They can’t just increase the price like that, there is no increase in our salaries. We still earn the same amount. I really pity those who are using it for business. How would they make gain?

‘IT IS SO UNFAIR, REALLY’ – Funke Oluwafemi

I have not refilled my gas in one month. When I noticed the sudden hike, I just decided not to bother myself. I am now using kerosene for the main time. Until I notice a fall in the price of gas, that is when I would start refilling again. It is so unfair, really.

‘WHICH ONE ARE WE GOING TO FACE NOW?’ – Helen Joel

I refilled our 12.5kg a week ago. I was surprised when it finished one week after, N5,000 is wasted. I am tired. Which one are we going to face now? Kerosene is also so expensive. Everything is just too expensive, wonder if we have any government really. It is really unfair. They don’t care if we survive or no

‘OUR LEADERS ARE NOT BOTHERED’ – Faith Awesome

The last I refilled was N3,000. I was shocked that the price has increased to N4,500. They sell it N4,900 in some places. That is what we have been using for years now. It also has more advantages than disadvantages, that is why I am sticking to it. But there should be a change really in this country. Things are getting so tough by the day. Our government seems not to have a clue to resolving them.

‘I AM SHORT OF WORDS’ – Zainab Adetedo

I don’t even know what to say. I couldn’t refill 12.5kg at once. It was half of it I refilled. It didn’t last us for two weeks. How do they want us to cope? I don’t even understand this country again. People are finding it difficult to eat already. This is another blow on their faces. They cannot afford kerosene, they cannot afford gas. Should we starve to death?

‘IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR GOD’S SAKE’ – Elizabeth Thomas

It is too expensive for God’s sake. All of N5,000 for something that wouldn’t last for two months. I normally use it for almost two months before, now it is just one month. And it is now too expensive.

‘I AM JUST SAD THAT I VOTED BUHARI TO POWER’ – Abudu Jibike

I had to put my camp gas inside when I heard it was N4,900. I took solace in using gas when kerosene was too expensive. Now, it is much more expensive and there is nothing we can do. I am just sad that I voted Buhari to power. How I wished I didn’t listen to people, see what it has cost us!

‘IT IS SO SAD REALLY’ – Esther Adebisi

It is so sad, really. That in a country with a government, nobody can explain what the problem is. I have not refilled in two months. I can’t even buy a gallon of kerosene. Most times I keep late night just to cook, boil water before they take light. Thank God I am not using prepaid metre, what would become of me.

At times, I cook what my children would take to school a day before so as to reduce cost.

‘THERE IS A GREAT PROBLEM THIS COUNTRY IS BATTLING’ – Tinuola Busari

When I calculated what I spend on gas and kerosene monthly, I was sober. I have even reduced the frequency of cooking at home. There is a great problem this country is battling. They said there is health hazard in using microwave, at least we would have cooked once and be warming it. Now, the alternative we have is too expensive. It is worrisome.

‘GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO SOMETHING FAST’ – Chinasa Odera

It is a sorry case. Thank God we live in our own house. I am back to firewood. Though I still use kerosene but not as much as before. Gas is a no go area for now. I wake up early, make fire outside and I cook what we would eat for the whole day before going about my own business.

But I am appealing to the government not to keep on folding their arms. The country is too hard. There are families who cannot afford to eat more than once a day, they are still increasing the prices of gas and kerosene. Must we all match to Aso Rock before they know that people are not finding things funny?
